Nvidia drivers install Debian 10

#1 Post by Data007 »

Hi
I have a dual boot machine, main graphics Nvidia Gtx 1070
. In windows and in Linux the drivers put the windows/linux(KDE), taskbar behind the display bezel.
This I can fix in windows by opening the Nvidia display config panel and enabling stretch and shrink display size. My quest is to have such access(shrink) display in Debian 10 (latest)

I have searched via google and YouTube and found loads of answers for Debian 9 ... but non for V10
I have followed these video's and done a number of steps all of which seem so fail at one point. I have gone in and added contrib non-free to the sources list, but simple commands like nvidia-detect fail, the package does not exist any more I cant find it, that will only tell me the name off the graphics card.
One video I found that was promising was https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_GFuJNpEF8 But my output at the end is not the same as in the video :(

Is there a file that I can edit to change the display resolution? so I can shrink the settings. Both screens Dual display work its just this behind the bezel thats crippling the display paradise.

Can anyone point me to how to install nvidia drivers in Debian 10? I see a few topics in hardware about supported cards but no install instructions.

I don't want to ask an obvious or stupid question, but are you sure the resolution is correct for the monitor?

Hi Yes its correct to a point its only a couple off points off and the driver/display is the same in windows.
If I had a way off manually altering the display resolution I can then change the ress. I write this in Linux so cant quote the exact two resolutions. :o
If you give me a minute ile pop into windows and get the sizes.

So it's not quite centralised on the monitor?

To answer your question the whole screen is to large it has to be shrunk.

the Resolution in windows :
1080p, 1920 X 1080 ... this has to be shrunk to 1080p 1824 x 1026

This is to me a rather odd resolution but its what is required to bring(in windows) all elements on screen.

Then it's your monitor that you need to sort out. Do you have some configuration button on your monitor to configure it?

Sure the display has lots of settings including zoom ... But non of these settings seem to work in windows at least.
These/this zoom settings are not variable they are fixed. Hence the fixing it in nvidia control panel.

I want to install the nvidia drivers if possible! I hope to game with the setup.

Do you have anything on your monitor to select Aspect? Or maybe alignment too? I have an Auto button on my monitor so it can configure and align itself.

Why do you say nvidia-detect is not in Buster?

Thanks for your reply, I was using apt-get install nvidia-detect and was drawing a blank, perhaps the sources is not setup properly.
Anyway I tracked it down in the software center after reading your reply and following the link. The output is as follows.

nvidia-detect
Detected NVIDIA GPUs:
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GP104 [GeForce GTX 1070] [10de:1b81] (rev a1)

Checking card: NVIDIA Corporation GP104 [GeForce GTX 1070] (rev a1)
Your card is supported by the default drivers and legacy driver series 390.
It is recommended to install the
nvidia-driver
package.

So that leaves my Original post how to install the Nvidia drivers? I have download Debian 10.

Hmmm, current nvidia driver in Buster is 418.74-1. Are you sure you have non-free sources active and updated?

That depends on your hardware. If it's a laptop with Optimus dual graphics you need to install Bumblebee.

I have attached my sources.list file. I have run apt-get update

You should not have these lines in sources:

Code: Select all

deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ stable main contrib non-free

deb http://httpredir.debian.org/debian/ stretch main contrib non-free
The first one is redundant as it is currently the same source as the buster line above it. The stretch line is dangerous. Is this a system upgraded from Stretch?

You could try removing those 2 lines and run:

Code: Select all

apt update
apt install nvidia-driver
But the problems that can be caused by mixed release sources can be unpredictable and possibly damaging. Good luck!

No not that Iam aware off, it is probably me in my many attempts to fix this system, I may just redo it from scratch.......

If you're running Buster, the only line you need is:

Code: Select all

deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ buster main contrib non-free
Comment out the rest.

You forgot the security ones. The 2 I mentioned should go, and the deb-src ones are not needed unless you want to compile software.

Not at all Steve. I wasn't trying to suggest that to make the system simpler, but to keep it simpler for the OP to understand.

They really should have those security repos enabled, even if it is harder to copy and paste three lines instead of two.

The OP also asked how to install the non-free Nvidia drivers. This gets asked many times a week, and the answer remains the same: follow the guide in the Debian wiki--like it is for so many questions here.
