If you're running Buster, the only line you need is:
Code: Select all
deb http://http.us.debian.org/debian/ buster main contrib non-free

Comment out the rest.

You forgot the security ones. The 2 I mentioned should go, and the deb-src ones are not needed unless you want to compile software.

'Tis a poor choice to sacrifice security for simplicity.

Not at all Steve. I wasn't trying to suggest that to make the system simpler, but to keep it simpler for the OP to understand.

They really should have those security repos enabled, even if it is harder to copy and paste three lines instead of two.

The OP also asked how to install the non-free Nvidia drivers. This gets asked many times a week, and the answer remains the same: follow the guide in the Debian wiki--like it is for so many questions here.

The wiki does not even include Debian 10. [To this date Sept 7, 2019]

AND IT SAYS NOTHING ABOUT NVIDIA 304 CAN'T WORK WITH DEBIAN 10.

And stuttering Nouveau (this date) isn't even working either.

DO NOT release tier upgrade to Debian 10 buster on your main systems where Nvidia 304 is desired.

Let me be clear:

Debian (10) just allowed numerous computers with legacy nvidia GPU's to fail BEFORE their time.

Because Nvidia stopped support and refuses to go open.

However; so what? Why HELP Nvidia obsolete them? Why should we also stop supporting GPU's that are working?

Either work with the last proprietary driver or fix open Nouveau. Either way you can't cut stuff off just because Nvidia does.

AND ALSO FAIL TO WARN PEOPLE.

If it's all important that xorg move away (not held back) from nvidia "legacy" cards then they also need a fork that doesn't.

And the new Wayland tests, ideas, and future is great; but so far limits what apps you can use with it. So we are still xorg or die until then.

Are we putting the cart before the horse (and blaming the BS in the road)?

I remember reading somewhere (not in this forum) that 3.04 was not going to be supported in buster (might have been in the installer since although I was running 390 I sill had 304 installed). I had an old Nvidia card that ran on legacy-304.xx in Jessie. It also ran on legacy 340.xx on stretch and legacy-390.xx in buster. Have you tried the legacy-390.xx or one of the other legacy drivers with your card in buster?

Sorry for the side track OP...

For a desktop, how much will it cost to get a video card that will work with the drivers in Buster and is much better than that ancient one? It can't be that much...

I got Nouveau working link above. But then nouveau was far to unstable. More at link above.

If Nouveau works well over time then great. It just hasn't been even as good; historically. Tested as poor.

Hi
Several Installs of Debian 10, latter I still get errors, Ive also been lapses in not replying to posts sorry.

In dmesg I get the following.
Code: Select all

This is a desktop machine specifically a gaming tower, with a Nvida GTX 1070 Graphics card as previously stated.

As I write this post IT IS displaying the graphics on screen correctly, I have plaid windows games (previously installations)ago.
I would like to nail this red errors in
Code: Select all
sudo demesg

Contained with in the code block to the Debian wiki https://wiki.debian.org/Firmware I have scanned this only I would need further guidance,
on exactly what to stick where so that the installer(Debian 10) finds the missing firmware.

Furthur options is downloading from Nvida the driver(linux) direct and installing that.

Nvidia Gtx 1070

Hello. Your card is pretty new. Released 3 years ago. So it will work great with new driver (418.74-1) as well. How do I install these drivers? It is very simple. Add contrib and non-free to your
Code: Select all
/etc/apt/sources.list
(more info here https://wiki.debian.org/SourcesList).
Then install the this script:
Code: Select all
nvidia-detect

Run it (as normal user).
Here example output:
Code: Select all
$ nvidia-detect
Detected NVIDIA GPUs:
02:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: NVIDIA Corporation GF108 [GeForce GT 430] [10de:0de1] (rev a1)
Your card is supported by the default drivers.
It is recommended to install the
    nvidia-driver
package.

Now, install Linux headers for the kernel you are using. If you are using the 4.19 Linux kernel in Debian Buster:
Code: Select all
# apt-get install linux-headers-$(uname -r|sed 's/[^-]*-[^-]*-//')

Then you can install the package:
Code: Select all
nvidia-driver
.
Code: Select all
# apt-get update
# apt-get install nvidia-driver

Restart your system to enable the nouveau blacklist.
This method i used on all my machines.

Aren't those pretty much the same instructions as in the Debian wiki?

There is nothing written about the installation of Nvidia drivers in Debian 10. I mean on the official Debian wiki. Therefore, I decided to share my experience. I understand that this method is no different from the one used in Debian 9, but I think it will make life easier for a newbie ...
