Install on Macbook Air 7,1 does not detect internal SSD

Postby ndanger000 » 2019-09-17 23:55

I am trying to install Debian 10 on a MacBook Air 7,1 (early 2015). I shrank the partition containing MacOS using Disk Utility, turned off FileVault, and erased the remaining space with

Code: Select all
$ diskutil eraseVolume free free disk0s5

with the intent of letting the installer notice the free space and partition it automatically.

However, the installer never recognizes the internal disk at all. When it gets to the stage of partitioning disks, the only disk that appears is the flash drive that has the installer image.

Any thoughts or ideas?

What kind of SSD is it?
For MacBook NVMe SSD's there are known isssues in Linux.
Have a look at it like:

Or look further and add or remove keywords form this search:

It seems that your MBA takes the same NVMe drives as my old model 2014 Mac Mini.

I recently converted that Mac Mini to take a regular Samsung 250GB EVO 970 NVMe drive,
using a zero-length adapter for the slightly different m2-implementation by Apple, see
also the discussion at
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/us ... i.2118732/
That discussion also applies to your MBA. Anyway, I had no problem installing Debian Buster as the only OS
to that NVMe drive.

You could also try to mount a regular m2 NVMe drive (like that Samsung) first in an external USB3 enclosure
and see if that works.
Real Debian users don't do chat...
