black screen using Nvidia external GPU

Postby hypertennis » 2019-09-26 20:34

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to use an external GPU (Nvidia) with my laptop (which has an Intel integrated graphics card) via Thunderbolt 3. No external monitors are present (although I also experimented briefly with one). Both cards are detected but the default (empty) xorg.conf configuration results in only the Intel card being used. When I try to create a xorg.conf file as per the instructions in http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/L ... ndr14.html (or anything else I found), I simply get a black screen before instead of the login screen. I am using the proprietary drivers but using nouveau does not seem to solve the issue.

I have installed nvidia-driver from the repository, blacklisted and purged nouveau, and purged bumblebee, bumblebee-nvidia and primus (which require to install legacy nonglvnd drivers which don't support my card).

The Xorg server log in /var/log/Xorg.0.log (at the end of this post) shows no errors. Xrandr only shows an Intel provider with the default configuration:
Code: Select all
$ xrandr --listproviders
Providers: number : 1
Provider 0: id: 0x45 cap: 0xf, Source Output, Sink Output, Source Offload, Sink Offload crtcs: 3 outputs: 3 associated providers: 0 name:modesetting

Here's my xorg.conf:
Code: Select all
Section "ServerLayout"
   Identifier "layout"
    Screen 0 "no_screen"
    Inactive  "intel_card"
EndSection

Section "Device"
   Identifier  "nvidia_card"

    Option "AllowExternalGpus" "True"

   BusID       "PCI:0:2:0"
EndSection

Section "Screen"

EndSection

Does ayone have an idea what the problem may be?
Thanks.

Additional details:

Maybe, I'm not a laptop guy, but I'm interested is how that thunderbolt device chain gets enumerated!

For your setup to boot to the nvidia I would try the simplest with nouveau.
Delete the xorg file and add a hint in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/52-external_nouveau.conf
Code: Select all
Section "Device"
    Identifier             "Screen0"
    Driver                 "nouveau"
    BusID                  "PCI:0:6:0"
EndSection

I think that is your busid

If this is wrong, you end up at the tty prompt, nano /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/52-external_nouveau.conf and comment it all out and reboot...

What I'd love to know is if you have iommu groups, is that nvidia in a clean group, or is the thunderbolt device in a clean group. Then it could pass to a VM!
Good Luck!

I tried backporting the 430 driver in Bullseye to Stretch-based MX 18 yesterday, and was successful. It built on a 5.2 kernel, but the Bumblebee switching couldn't find the card. I then backported and installed the 435.21 driver in Experimental, and that works! So that might be another possible cause.

Code: Select all
$ optirun inxi -G
Graphics:  Device-1: Intel UHD Graphics 630 driver: i915 v: kernel
           Device-2: NVIDIA GP107M [GeForce GTX 1050 Ti Mobile] driver: nvidia v: 435.21
           Display: x11 server: X.Org 1.19.2 driver: intel resolution: 1920x1080~60Hz
           OpenGL: renderer: GeForce GTX 1050 Ti/PCIe/SSE2 v: 4.6.0 NVIDIA 435.21

The 435 driver also has the advantage of building on the 5.3.1 Siduction kernel I also backported yesterday to see how it ran on my laptop.
The MX Linux repositories: Backports galore! If we don't have something, just ask and we'll try--we like challenges. New packages: Chromium 78.0.3904.87, Hedgewars 1.0.0, PulseEffects 4.6.8, Telegram-desktop 1.8.15, Pale Moon 28.7.2, KeepassXC 2.5.0

Unfortunately I get a black screen too with nouveau, this time with some error messages in the log:
Code: Select all
[   594.286] (II) modesetting: Driver for Modesetting Kernel Drivers: kms
[   594.420] (EE) [drm] Failed to open DRM device for pci:0000:06:00.0: -19
[   594.432] (II) modeset(G0): using drv /dev/dri/card0
[   594.570] (EE) [drm] Failed to open DRM device for pci:0000:06:00.0: -19
[   594.570] (WW) Falling back to old probe method for modesetting
[   594.582] (EE) No devices detected.
[   594.583] (EE)
Fatal server error:
[   594.583] (EE) no screens found(EE)
[   594.583] (EE)

Perhaps this card is just not supported yet by nouveau?

I didn't quite understand your comment. What would I gain by setting up a VM with GPU passthrough, assuming I could do it?
I haven't set up any IOMMU groups. No special configuration on my part was needed to detect the PCI devices, I simply updated the thunderbolt firmware and connected the Aorus Gaming Box to my laptop.

Cool, so could you explain what worked for you in the end? The 435.21 driver in Experimental with kernel 5.2 without an external monitor? If so, do you also use an external GPU and what were the configurations you used for xorg and/or Bumblebee?

Firmware for nvidia gp106 is in firmware-misc-nonfree, likely already installed.

In your nouveau test did you delete the xorg.conf and add the hint file in /usr/share/X11/xorg.conf.d/ ??
I think the busid is what I typed, could be "PCI:6:0:0" but I'd try 0:6:0 also.

Also do I understand there is no external monitor hooked to the external card? Then that's part of it, no screens! As far as I know you need another frame buffer scrapper device to pump it back to the laptop monitor. I got that working once, at half the rate of a directly connected monitor. Now my input is just noise - carry on...

You can ignore my iommu tangent too, I'm just curious for my own purposes.

I managed to get it working with the 435 nvidia-driver from Experimental, thanks!

I had to remove the Xorg.conf file, install bumblebee-nvidia, then add/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu and /usr/lib/i386-linux-gnu/ to the library path in the [driver-nvidia] section of /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf (otherwise libGL.so.1 won't be found), then added Option "AllowExternalGpus" to /etc/bumblebee/xorg.conf.nvidia, then ran systemctl restart bumblebeed, and now I can run specific applications using the external GPU via optirun (not the whole desktop though). Glxinfo reports the nvidia driver, and graphical benchmarks and the performance of games running under Wine confirm that the GPU is being used.
I will try later with an external monitor but I guess it should work as well.

Some other issues:
- I had to add export __GLVND_DISALLOW_PATCHING=1 to my .bashrc, otherwise some OpenGL applications crash.
- nvidia-settings only works like this: 'optirun -b none nvidia-settings -c :8'. I don't know why.
- I read somewhere that primus is supposed to replace optirun, but in Debian installing primus requires replacing the Nvidia driver with 390 legacy drivers (installing libgl1-nvidia-glvnd-glx and nvidia-legacy-390xx-driver-libs-nonglvnd), so that's not an option for me.
- Sometimes an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file gets created automatically (in fact copied from an older version that I wrote). I don't know which services does this, but to start X I just remove it and run systemctl restart lightdm.
