Debian 10.1 rejects printer
Debian 10.1 rejects printer
In the second half of 2017 I got an old but perfectly functioning HP LJ 1018 printer. For some weeks I could get it to work with my then Debian 9 system only if I installed it afresh each time I wanted to print something. Finally, in December of that year, I found a procedure which installed the printer so that it stayed installed: at https://tinyurl.com/zfnfmdr. The printer kept working through pre-release Debian Buster until the first release of Debian 10. With Debian 10.1, however, the installation fails. I have tried the procedure referred to above, I have tried through the CUPS web interface, and I have tried through hp-setup and also system-config-printer -- but all stop when trying to download the necessary firmware file.

Re: Debian 10.1 rejects printer
foo2zjs is in the repos - no need to build from source. https://packages.debian.org/buster/prin ... er-foo2zjs
I did not see the hotplug script in the debian file list. The Debian Dev's appear to have migrated it to
/lib/udev/rules.d/85-hplj10xx.rules

Re: Debian 10.1 rejects printer
Thank you, arochester. I shall go to the link you provide and see if there is something there which I do not already know.
Shep, thank you. I have no trouble getting or building foo2zjs. The difficulty seems related to getting the firmware from the HP site. I cannot say if Debian 10.1 is different in some way from its predecessor.

Re: Debian 10.1 rejects printer
The foo2zjs package has a "getweb" utility which will download the firmware. If you tried that utility and it failed; HP has been known move/remove things. I would suspect it may be on the CD if that can be downloaded from HP website. Sometimes it is in an *.exe file that can be extracted in linux with cabextract. Here is an alternative source

Re: Debian 10.1 rejects printer
Shep, Thank you. The method I have been using to install the printer includes this getweb utility. If HP have done something to it, I now have the source you provide.
