Debian 10 occasionally freezes after update from Debian 9

#1 Post by melfn »

I'm posting this topic here because I think it's an hardware/driver problem, feel free to move it to another board.

Hi all, recently I updated Debian 9 to Debian 10 on my dell laptop and now I'm experiencing (apparently) random freezes. The computer just stops working and all I can do is reboot it.
I searched the web and I found many solutions but no one worked, also because the hardware mentioned in the solutions was different than mine. Also I have another different laptop in which I also updated Debian 9 to Debian 10 and it works flawlessly.

Can someone help me to solve this problem?

I attach a report of my hardware and software settings at the end of this topic. If you need any other information just ask, I will provide them. Otherwise maybe you can suggest a tool to monitor the system load/processes/RAM usage and other parameters or a command to run such that I can tell exactly what happened just before the system crashed.

Thank you in advance.

Set up journalctl so you can read the journal log. You're probably on the right track thinking it's hardware but you need more info to narrow it down.

Thank you for the reply.
I set up journalctl such that it saves the logs of the previous boots on the disk using the procedure I found on askubuntu:

Code: Select all

# mkdir -p /var/log/journal
# systemd-tmpfiles --create --prefix /var/log/journal

in /etc/systemd/journald.conf I added the line/changed the default value of the Storage option:

Code: Select all

Storage=persistent
Now I can see the logs of the previous boots:

Code: Select all

journalctl --list-boots
journalctl -b-1
And I set up a cronjob that runs every Sunday cleaning the journal entries older than a week:

Code: Select all

0 0 * * sun journalctl --vacuum-time=7d
Now let's wait for the next crash (it should take a couple of days), thank you so much for now!

I find the most useful command is

Code: Select all

journalctl -b -1 -p 3
I'm a bit dubious about the "procedure from askubuntu". All you need to do is create the directory /var/log/journal to have a persistent journal. "Storage=auto" is the default which will save the journal as long as the directory is there. I'm not sure that "# systemd-tmpfiles --create --prefix /var/log/journal" actually does anything.
Journal is very easy to use and one of the better features of systemd. It's worth knowing its basics.
Also I set "SystemMaxUse=50M" to limit the journal size rather than running a separate cron job for vacuum.

Thank you for the reply, I didn't notice that the default for Storage was auto. as for the

Code: Select all

systemd-tmpfiles --create --prefix /var/log/journal
command, I read in the manual that it just sets ownership, access mode and security labels to the directory.

Thank you for your answer too, it is very useful.

I took that kernel from nowhere in particular: it came with Debian 9 when I installed it back in 2017 (Debian 9 was the testing distribution at that time if I remember well). Now I realize that I never updated the kernel all this time and maybe that's the cause for the random freezings.
I always update the system through apt but this doesn't upgrade the kernel unless I install the packages for the newer version (my bad); also I followed this guide to upgrade Debian 10 from Debian 9 --not sure why it didn't update the kernel too.

Unfortunately now I have some important work to do on that laptop so I cannot take the risk of upgrading the kernel.
I'll let you know soon, thank you again for now.

The kernel will be kept updated as long as you have the linux-image-amd64 metapackage installed, that always lists the most recent kernel as a dependency.

Leaving your machine running an outdated kernel with known vulnerabilities is far more risky than updating to the latest stable kernel version.

I don't have it, that's why Debian never updated the kernel in these years.

Actually I didn't meant "risk" in terms of vulnerability.
This laptop is a top-notch one and it has always had issues with the Debian installation (mostly because of the proprietary wifi and graphics drivers I think). When I bought it I first tried to install Ubuntu but it didn't work. Then I installed Debian 8 (at that time the Stable distribution) but it didn't see the wireless card, so I switched to Debian 9 (testing). It only worked from the command line but at least I could see the wireless card so I connected from the command line and installed the desktop environment. When I rebooted the wireless card didn't work again, so I had to install the (proprietary) drivers by downloading them from another computer and transferring with an USB stick.
A few weeks ago I upgraded to Debian 10 and after rebooting (guess what) the wireless didn't work so I had to fix it again.

You see, this is my situation: if I upgrade the kernel now I really don't know if it my laptop will work and I'm not sure I can fix it again (Installing Debian 9 with a different kernel and transferring the packages with an USB stick and all the other stuff).
I prefer by far keeping the system as it is with all the random freezings and the vulnerabilities as I have done all this time.

I will upgrade the kernel when I finish this work, I'm positive that this will solve the freezing problems.
Thank you so much for now, I will let you know

You seem to know what's the problem, and found a temporal way to correct.

Pretty great % of the recent posts are from wifi or display problems. In most cases you need to enable non-free, and install needed firmware or microcode.

The old kernel version will not be removed and will be available in the "Advanced Options" GRUB sub-menu.

And if you tell us which wireless card you actually have then we might be able to help you with that. I'm guessing it's a crappy Broadcom device but this is just a stab in the dark.

EDIT:but start a new thread for the wireless problem, it is off-topic here. Search for "Debian $name_of_wireless_device" first though, you probably just need to install the DKMS driver package so that the kernel module is rebuilt automatically when the kernel is updated.

I already solved the wifi problem (twice!), I don't need support.
I don't want to upgrade the kernel because I don't know if I can solve it again with the new kernel. I have the feeling that if I update it the laptop will never boot again (: Or maybe upgrading the kernel will remove the microcode files I copied in the filesystem and the wifi will never work again, even with this kernel.

For the second time: the old kernel will not be removed. You will still be able to boot with the old kernel if the new one doesn't work for you. And no, a kernel installation will not touch any files in /lib/firmware and anyway the µcode is baked into the (old) initramfs so it wouldn't matter if it did.

I do.

I understood.

How can you be so sure? Last time I updated the whole system (not the kernel) it removed all the microcode files and the wifi didn't work. I cannot be 100% sure that it will work after the upgrade (even with the old kernel).

How can you be so sure?
Because the kernel package doesn't touch anything in /lib/firmware

That may be true for the wifi, but how can you be so sure that literally all the other parts of the operating system will work after the update?

No but I can be sure that if things don't work then you can just reboot and select the old kernel in the Advanced Options boot sub-menu to get things working again.

I haven't updated the kernel (yet) but I found the cause of the problem: my computer freezes every time I try to resize an xfce-4-terminal window or gnome-terminal window by dragging and dropping the bottom right corner (I am not joking). Xterm works flawlessly.

I have found some related post that maybe could help me and which I will read tomorrow, but before asking again for your support I will update the kernel.

Thank you for everything, I'll let you know.

Really?
Nobody have noticed what is going on here? Debian 9 Stretch was released starting with kernel v4.9, not v4.6 -> frankendebian or simply a broken system

I don't know either how Stretch had a 4.6 kernel in 2017, following the OP's account. The 4.9 kernel was frozen into it in late 2016.
