MOST COMPATIBLE GPU'S?

Postby marco7777777 » 2020-06-16 22:07

Hello, I recently made the switch from Windows 7 to Debian 10.

My question is: What are the best graphics cards out there for Debian?

And by best I mean what can I buy that I can just pop in to motherboard and get it to work with as little hassle as possible?

That is really the only criteria.

I need a GPU that won't take many hours of scouring the internet and many hours more of trial and error on the terminal and whatnot.

without qualifiers?
The one you used for Win7, and most any since.

@CwF
Unfortunately there are no drivers for Linux.

(raises eyebrows)

Really, no drivers at all? Why don't you tell us what card you have, and maybe we can be the judge of that?

AMD GPUs are supported by drivers already in the kernel, as long as you add the non-free firmware. Nvidia cards have some support with another free driver, or perhaps with the proprietary Nvidia driver, though Nvidia does drop support for older GPUs. But even then you can pick up a supported used Nvidia GPU at little expense.

Sure thing.
Here's the model: GV-N1030OC-2GI

That's an NVIDIA card, the kernel already has (nouveau) drivers for it and Debian can supply proprietary drivers that will work.

Don't buy that though, NVIDIA hate the open source community and so should not be rewarded with your money. Get an (older) AMD card instead and install the correct firmware.

Yes, you have to break yourself of the Windows habit of going to a website to find drivers. Most drivers are either in the kernel already, or can be installed from the Debian repository. If you don't know what the repository is, then you need to buckle down and learn Debian basics. We all had to at one time.

@stevepusser
Ok I got the nvidia card working. Thank you so much.
For future reference, are AMD cards usually easier to get working?
I know nvidia makes it hard for Linux by closing off their stuff.

If a distro includes non-free firmware that the AMD cards require, most AMD cards "just work". Debian's normal ISOs don't have the firmware because of Debian's stance on non-free firmware, but they do provide images with the firmware, or it can be installed later.

Another point is that Debian firmware is almost a year old now, even in backports, and will lack support for newer AMD hardware. I check each day for updates upstream in Debian, but nothing so far, so users have to resort to packages from outside the Debian repos, or manually get and install the firmware files from the kernel git repo.

I always find this very informative.

add 1 word and you will also find this:

Success further with what you already achieved....
