Laptop screen goes black and comes back randomly

Getting your soundcard to work, using Debian on non-i386 hardware, etc

Laptop screen goes black and comes back randomly

Postby Onsemeliot » 2020-08-16 12:51

A friend donated an old Acer Aspire 4830TG which seems to work fine so far. So I wanted to install Debian Buster with Xfce or LXDE on it. It has some damage on one side at the hinge. I suspect a fall has caused a connector to the screen to become wonky. Therefore, the screen goes blank every few seconds for some seconds. I couldn't find a position at which the screen doesn't go blank but I have managed to have it on for several minutes without vaishing at all. But it has been very unreliable so far.

I didn't encounter a similar problem yet. Does anyone of you have experience with such a case? How are the chances to repair something like that? I didn't take it apart yet but I fear the wonky part sits right inside the hinge ... an it doesn't look like that is meant to be taken apart.

Thank you for sharing this hardware guide for replacing the screen. I will see, what I can do.

I was able to install Debian Buster Xfce and during the installation the screen didn't blank out for hours. Afterwards the screen problem is back but I get logged out most of the time when the screen goes blank on me. Therefore, it might not be a wonky contact that just concerns the screen after all. Maybe it has to do with the graphics card. If it was just the screen itself the blank screen wouldn't affect my login status. Unfortunately Debian Xfce can't use my wireless also. I might have to do some more work in that regard too because it is impractical to always use an ethernet cable.

Originally Windows 7 was installed on the system and the screen problem was there already. This was the main reason I thought that it wasn't some sort of driver problem. But maybe some contact on the mainboard is loose or broken. But it doesn't seem to be influenced with me rocking the laptop.

I detached the screen bezel and cleaned the case up inside a little. Only after the third re-boot the screen started blacking out again. Therefore, I had some time to install the needed proprietary nvidea drivers.

So far I didn't find any errors in "/etc/X11/xorg.0.log" (added below) for the blackouts. But I found that not each time the screen blacks out I actually have to login again. There are sometimes shorter black screen breaks. In those cases pressing the space bar is enough to get me back to the normal screen content. (It feels like the monitor would get the wrong signal to get into sleep mode because if I am not fast enough to react I have to log-in again. But I switched off all energy saving functionality without any effect.)

Re: Laptop screen goes black and comes back randomly

Postby Onsemeliot » 2020-08-21 16:27

Now I can finally confirm that the issue is not present on an external monitor even when at the same time the screen is blacking out on the laptop. But I didn't have the logout-problem when the external screen was active. I suspect now it is the backlight. But as expected it is more expensive to buy a new fitting screen then to buy the whole device used which would give me spare parts in case of any other issue appearing. I suspect it wouldn't be possible to actually repair the screen – especially without very specific equipment.

Edit:
Today came the replacement screen I ordered (for about 70 Euros). Unfortunately, after installing it the problem still persisted. Then I realised it could only be a problem with the cables inside the case. (I was aware that this was an option before but I felt it was unlikely. I should have checked before ordering new hardware.) I took everything apart and put it together again. Now the problem seems to be gone. I suspect I can only be confident after having started the system again and again because it once already seemed to work until the problem returned on the next reboot. Now I'm in the first reboot and it seems to be still fine. Time will show. The RAM upgrade and SSD didn't arrive yet.
