[Solved] Slow SDD disk in linux, FAST in Win10

Postby bester69 » 2020-11-21 16:45

Hi,
Ive tried two different SDD disk models (Crucial BX500 and SanDisk Plus) in my Acer Extensa5230
and both of them got same results.:

- 120-150MB/s for Windows10
- 30-50 MB/s for debian 9
;
thought hddparam tests report otherwise: :shock:
sudo hdparm -tT /dev/sda
Timing cached reads: 1918 MB in 2.00 seconds = 959.17 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 674 MB in 3.00 seconds = 224.55 MB/sec

I tried to update firmware and kernel with same results...

My Sytem Now.:
- Debian 9
- 4.4.238-0404238-generic
- SanDisk SSD PLUS 240GB
- BTRFS (fstab)

Code: Select all
UUID=c649c9a7-6ed6-482b-9326-026837988bb7 /              btrfs   subvol=rootsys,defaults,noatime,space_cache,inode_cache 0 1
UUID=c649c9a7-6ed6-482b-9326-026837988bb7 /home          btrfs   subvol=home,defaults,noexec,noatime,space_cache,inode_cache 0 2

Try adding the ssd mount option, btrfs performs very well for me with that applied:
Code: Select all
~$ grep " / " /proc/self/mounts
/dev/nvme0n1p3 / btrfs rw,relatime,ssd,space_cache,subvolid=381,subvol=/alpine 0 0
~$ doas hdparm -t /dev/nvme0n1p3

/dev/nvme0n1p3:
 Timing buffered disk reads: 2964 MB in  3.00 seconds = 987.70 MB/sec
~$

And there are also the various compression algorithms: https://btrfs.wiki.kernel.org/index.php/Compression

Have you tried any other filesystems? Btrfs is the slowest.

Just moving/copying a file bigger than 1GByte in same directory... and using timer.,
in Win10, that file took around just 10 seconds while in linux around 30 seconds.. its clearly 3 times slower in linux.. :shock:

Thanks a lot for help, I really appreciate it.. :cry:

dd if=/dev/zero of=sal bs=100M count=10
10+0 registros leídos
10+0 registros escritos
1048576000 bytes (1,0 GB, 1000 MiB) copied, 3,76175 s, 279 MB/s

X FILE CLOSED (The culpier was dolphin explorer[/b)

Ok, everything was OK, these SSD ones are very weird to understand and they seems to behave different according to the tools that use them..

[b]The culpier was dolphin explorer
... Ive used Nautilus.. and It takes same time than Windows to move/copy files...I wonder what dolphin is doing under gui to take so long in transfer files..

Now, im happy, thanks to all for help.. :o

Speed in file operation also depends on the filesystem and its settings, not only the drive and operating system.

Here, you can see differences times among files explores
https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=192828
dolphin: 1:23
thunar: 1:17
nautilus: 0:26
windows exlorer: 0:14
pcmanfm: 0:10
command line: 0:02

Im searching for a workaround for dolphin...we will see if something available :?
