Intel Wireless-AC 9560 firmware not working

#1 Post by lucasgvarela »

I'm trying to go back to Debian, but I can't get wi-fi to work.

First I tried the stable version, but my wi-fi, graphic cards, bluetooth were not working, I had problems with kernels 4.anything in the past with others distros too, so I know my hardware really needs newer kernel to work, version 5.anything or superior

With that in mind and after trying the stable version just to be sure It was not really work out-of-the-box I decided to go with backports to new kernel version, that failed to provide me wi-fi, so I did a new fresh install on gnome-box vm, I did the following steps/trials so far:

1 base install (nothing selected on tasksel)
2 added "bullseye main contrib non-free" instead of "buster main" (commented out the updates and security repos, I kept just the base)
3 apt update && apt upgrade
4 reboot
5 apt install gnome-core
6 apt install firmware-iwlwifi
7 Downloaded the Intel® Wireless-AC 9560 firmware https://wireless.wiki.kernel.org/_media ... 8819.0.tgz - added iwlwifi-9000*.ucode inside /lib/firmware
8 apt install firmware-linux-nonfree
9 Restarted again, still no wi-fi

What should I try or do next to solve this problem?

That card is supported by the stock Debian buster kernel and firmware-iwlwifi packages.

That breaks Debian stable. Read https://wiki.debian.org/DontBreakDebian

That shows a virtual machine (which does not have a wireless card). Have you tried Debian on the bare metal?

Hey I checked the package before, just for info I tried to ctrl+f on package details, but I can't find any mention about AC 9560:

Upps, I'm really trying on VM before to avoid problems with the bare metal installation, but that may explain why it's not working... it's using bridge network connection.. oh.... I will try a real installation later, I don't have any usb right now.

I think there's a typo in the package information — the 9560 is misidentified as the "9650". Use the
  • link (bottom right of the page) to see the actual firmware supplied by the package.

You should read the official installation guide, the relevant section has a link to the unofficial ISO images that already contain non-free firmware.

Just to be safe, can you tell us in a nice, concise, yet informative way exactly what other hardware you have, so we don't waste time on hardware that even backports won't support? Maybe with "inxi -Fxxxz" running on bare metal?

Things like "Intel graphics @#%$^" aren't much use and are much inferior to something like "Intel UHD Graphics 630"...

The OP should probably open a new thread for their graphics card, it is off topic here. But they should read http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=142974 first.
