[?]Are Realtek Audio Drivers for Linux available for use

#1 Post by bkpsusmitaa »

The details of the Lenovo laptop, earlier with my daughter who used it with Doze OS, is now used by me, obtained from Hardinfo scan is here: Notes on some issues with lenovo laptop network set up ...
The audio device can't record audio while playing, i.e., in duplex mode. Pulse audio Volume Control or System tray can't be used.
Using the Hardinfo data, the internet was searched for the said laptop, reaching the Lenovo site. The Motherboard audio appears to be from Realtek.
Lenovo doesn't appear to have Linux drivers hosted for their laptops.
The Lenovo site says that the audio driver is Realtek audio drivers "Lenovo ideapad 320-15ISK" LNVNB161216 with the following details:
Realtek Audio_6.0.1.8652.A
Again checked the internet with the string:
linux Realtek audio drivers "Lenovo ideapad 320-15ISK" LNVNB161216
and
Linux driver "Realtek Audio_6.0.1.8652.A"
Unable to find any Linux drivers for Realtek audio hardware device.
I am afraid that without Realtek drivers the audio hardware won't work in Duplex mode with PulseAudio Volume Control or Pulse Audio System Tray packages.
Any help in this regard please?

The drivers are probably already included in the kernel (unless the hardware is too new for buster's two year old kernel). Use 'lspci -k' to check if they're loaded for the device. You probably just need the non-free firmware.

Thank you, "Head_on_a_Stick", for replying to my post. I am feeling horrible for the absence of duplex operations.

Please feel free to advise in further details please.

Not to be concerned. The laptop is older than 3 years. I am still in stretch. Why? Answer is here.

You don't by any chance have a program called Timidity installed do you? The reason I ask is that it seems to block sound with this card for a lot of people.

Thank you for this suggesting a change of tack.
"No" in Debian stretch 9.11.0 and "Yes" in Knoppix 8.6.1. In the either of the two, pulseaudio doesn't work. While in Debian it operates but doesn't record in duplex, in Knoppix the pulseaudio Volume Control can't establish connection to PulseAudio.
Have uninstalled Timidity in Knoppix. But no change in the end result.
I have also uninstalled the two packages appearing to be connected with timidity: libsdl2-mixer-2.0-0, ver 2.0.4+dfsg1-1libsdl-mixer1.2 and libsdl2-mixer-2.0-0, ver 1.2.12-15,
Thank you once again. Please keep at it. We all together shall ultimately achieve a breakthrough in this.

These two commands should tell you if there are any errors reported for the sound card either while the computer is booting up or running. Please post the output. I'm no expert, but I came across the commands while looking into a sound issue of my own. They may help you.

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep snd

Code: Select all

journalctl -k | grep -Ei "snd|sound|audio|multi"

The difference is immediately apparent in ordering of the lines. If you and i aren't able to discern, there must be excellent systems admins who must be browsing these forums.
Would they address our issue? That's the imperative question.

This is Debian Vs Knoppix, right? One seems to have recognised the Codec chip as ALC3227, the other is using a generic driver. Do you have firmware-linux-nonfree installed as Head_on_a_Stick suggested?

This Soundcard/chip/codec/driver whatever does seem to be vulnerable to being jammed up by sound apps like Timidity. Try

Code: Select all

# fuser -v /dev/snd/*
If anything apart from Pulse/Alsa are using sound, it could be a problem.

This could be useful too:

Code: Select all

lspci -knn | grep -iA2 audio
There seem to be a lot of issues with this card producing less sound in Linux than Windows because it has two outputs and Linux uses the wrong one by default. This might help. Possibly. Maybe.

http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php? ... 48#p693176

Of course ideally the person helping there could comment as he seems to know what he's talking about. Maybe he'll drop by.

You could try this too (it possibly does the same thing, so one or the other.

No. When I posted the outputs as you had directed, I used my two laptops [ HP, the one okay (with PulseAudio Volume Control and Duplex recording), versus Lenovo, the non-functional (on PulseAudio Volume Control and Duplex recording) ], either of them with only Debian. No Knoppix here.

In either of the laptops, Knoppix with Pulseaudio duplex doesn't work.
FreewheelinFrank wrote:Do you have firmware-linux-nonfree installed as Head_on_a_Stick suggested?
No, where was I to search for the appropriate non-free driver? He had asked for posting the output of a code-line. I did that. He didn't return.

I have told you that I removed not only Timidity but the applications having any relation to timidity.

Okay. Let's see how far could we reach.

India is so distant from the Debian Hive, where most buzz happens, that it is difficult to identify brands that would support Debian or any other Linux. I have written to four vendors who have been identified by Debian as selling branded laptop with Debian. None of them replied. I even tried calling them, sending SMSes. But silence everywhere.

I lament everyday that Debian even with all its Openness is unduly held back by the Cabal of Proprietary software, the hardware industry catering to that Cabal for PCs. By Collective Zero Sum Games For Self-preservation

Re: [?]Are Realtek Audio Drivers for Linux available for use

#12 Post by FreewheelinFrank »

OK, my bad. I missed the line where you say it's a different laptop.

The working laptop seems to be using a Realtek-specific driver, and the non-working one a generic driver.

Like you I looked at firmware-realtek and didn't see any soundcard firmware, so I assumed Head_on_a_Stick was talking about firmware-linux-nonfree. I suggest you install both and we can sort out later which one contains the soundcard firmware.

I waould also suggest running

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep firmware
just in case we missed any firmware warnings before.

That you for posting the fuser output. I know you said you had uninstalled the program, but it's good to a)check and b)show anybody else who arrives via a search with the same issue how to check if Timidity is the problem. You output confirms that Pulseaudio is using one output of the card, I think. But is it the right one?

Could you post the result of

Code: Select all

aplay -l
First check that firmware is installed, then if it's still not working try creating the file in

Code: Select all

/etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf
and rebooting. (See previous post for file contents)

It may be an issue with the sound card needing different codecs for different outputs and this may fix it. If it doesn't, you can simply delete the file you created with no harm done.

Please don't apologise. You are engaged in public service, and therefore be admired. We always make mistakes, don't we?

Yes, true.

This, v 20161130-5 in Stretch 9.11.0 too doesn't appear to contain soundcard firmware. Better let HOAS (Head_on_a_Stick) clarify. This firmware isn't installed on my HP laptop, where pulseaudio works fine.
But I checked the dependencies of firmware-linux-nonfree and found the package firmware-misc-nonfree, also ver 20161130-5. Does it contain some of audio drivers? The card/chip for which required could be checked. Details in info of synaptic. Has drivers for "creative". "Realtek" or "audio"
Details could be checked please.

Comparing the outputs for aplay -l in the cases of Lenovo as opposed to HP, is this a problem?

Re: [?]Are Realtek Audio Drivers for Linux available for use

You need firmware-iwlwifi, firmware-misc-nonfree and install the previously mentioned packages too. It won't hurt to have firmware installed that is not used, but not having necessary firmware will have a negative impact.

The .conf file you have to create yourself, but try the firmware first and see if the card still shows up as generic.

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep -e Wireless

[ 7.111994] iwlwifi 0000:02:00.0: Detected Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 3165, REV=0x210

Code: Select all

 lspci | grep Wireless
02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 3165 Plus Bluetooth (rev 99)
firmware-iwlwifi, ver 20161130-5, firmware-nonfree is already installed. So why firmware-misc-nonfree and other earlier mentioned packages also?
WiFi is working fine. So why should the set up disturbed unnecessarily?
Please the last lines of the output:

Code: Select all

dmesg | grep firmware

Okay. Did you want me to creatte an empty file at /etc/modprobe.d/ as alsa-base.conf ? Have created it.
Should we wait for a second opinion? Otherwise, a partially working system could be totally non-functional.

Like I said, if the firmware is not actually necessary, it causes no harm. It just like a book on your shelf that you never read. The .conf file only affects sound- if it doesn't work, you can simply delete it when you reboot. But first make sure you have no missing firmware.

The OP appears to have a functional driver for their sound card that does not seem to require firmware so the configuration file shouldn't be needed.

@OP: so you have sound, correct? The problem is that you can't play and record at the same time?

Thanks for the clarification. Is there any significance to the fact that the codec is listed as generic, and not identified? I've never seen that before. I saw a post somewhere where somebody had removed the firmware for the chip and found it was no longer listed by name (something like ALC****) but as generic, with some loss of functionality.

This sound card seems to cause quite a few people issues with Linux using the wrong output, and for some of them a config file has helped.

Apologies for barking up the wrong tree.

Yes. True.
BTW, FreewheelinFrank, i have installed the firmware-misc-nonfree without any change to the situation post-installation. What about "... install the previously mentioned packages ..."?

I missed the fact that the wifi driver is loading but with (unimportant) errors.

http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=134530

It looks like firmware isn't going to fix the sound issue then.
