Make sure you're using a 2.6 kernel (uname -a); as root:
apt-get install alsa-base alsa-utils alsa-oss && alsaconf
If there are any error messages or something that you don't understand post, if it all succeeds, but you still don't get sound post the output of lsmod.

Help - Soyo sy-k7vmp2 with integrated sound not work???

#3 Post by spjrc »

Anon,

Thanks for your information. I followed your instructions exactly - apt-get install alsa-base alsa-utils alsa-oss && alsaconf. Then I used alsaconf to install my on-board integrated sound card.
alsa-base (v1.0.8-7)
alsa-utils (v1.0.8-4)
alsa-oss (v1.0.8-1)

Software remarks
KsCD 1.4 No sound from playing my music CD
Gnome 2.0 CD Player No sound from playing my music CD
Rhythmbox 0.8.8 sound works when I play the music from internet radio stations
Totem Movie Player sound works when I play a movie CD.
Totem (v0.100 using xine-lib version 1.0.0).
====================================
When I login in KDE, the sound will play right after the login in.
Since I have the AMD ATHLON XP 2800+ CPU, I installed Linux debian 2.6.8-2-k7.
====================================

ANY IDEA??? HOW TO MAKE KsCD or Gnome CD player to work?????

Judging from your lsmod output, that part is perfect.
What used to be the case (although it isn't now, but I'm running sid), is that the dedicated cd playing programs would only work if there was a cable from the cd drive to the soundcard, while most pc features this, some do not and on other architects like macs, it's an unknown concept. Rather than pulling your box apart first thing , install xmms. The normal install of xmms can only play audio cd's if you have the cable attached, install xmms-cdread and it can play the cd without the cable, although you might have to enable the plugin under /options/preferences. (It's a bit fiddly to play cd's from xmms, you have to select "play location" and enter the device name, /dev/cdrom will probably work if you don't know exactly).

cd player

#5 Post by spjrc »

Anon,

Thanks for your reply. I just downloaded alsaplayer software using Synaptic Package Manager. Presently, I have no problem playing my music CDs using alsaplayer.

Thanks once again.

My next project is to see whether I can use SKYPE Telephone softwar

spjrc> I have no problem playing my music CDs using alsaplayer.

Take a look at grip. It is, I think, a much nicer CD player.
