intimidat0r> now its saying something about kernel sources and a /lib/modules/.../build directory. any idea what that's about?
Sorry, can't read your screen from where I sit. ;-) What exactly are the messages?
intimidat0r> but it says i need to get ieee80211 so i go to ieee80211.sf.net and download that.
it?

Ah! You're telling me that you successfully installed kernel-image-2.6.8-2.686, rebooted, your wireless card still isn't recognized, and you are again trying to build modules for it. Something isn't kosher.
Linux will automatically configure only one ethernet adapter per computer. Additional adaptors have to be manually configured. Do you have an ethernet adaptor built into your motherboard that is not being used? If so, go into BIOS and disable it. Linux should then set up the wireless adaptor as etho.
Do lspci -v and post the contents of the Ethernet controller section.
This wireless card is a PCI card or a PCMCIA card?

Apparently, we are discussing a laptop with Intel Centrino chipset / CPU / wireless card, and the wireless card is a mini-PCI configuration. I will assume that you are using Sarge. Go to http://packages.debian.org/stable/net/ipw2200-source, read and follow directions.

initimidat0r> In order to compile these modules you need the kernel sources (or the kernel-headers for the kernel-image packages from Debian)
Review my first post to this thread.
initimidat0r> it said i could run the PREPARE command but i tried and neither PREPARE or prepare are recognized by bash
Well... man module-assistant says that there is a "prepare" command, but there isn't! ?!?!?!

big sigh... I've never owned a laptop and I've never used wireless, but many who do tell me that the Centrinos are the best laptop / wireless offering that Intel has ever sold. However, this laptop is asking you to jump through hoops that I would never expect a typical laptop owner to have to jump through.
We've made headway through this thread, but I'm starting to think that the end is not near. Are there any Linux User Groups near you, intimidat0r? Take a look here and here. A little face-to-face attention at a LUG meeting would save you a lot of frustration. If no nearby LUG, you want to post to the group of people most likely to have experience with this type of problem. That group is lists.debian.org/debian-laptop/.
