conflicting sound driver

#1 Post by debainnewbie »

Driver 'sound' has registered the sound device (character major 14) for itself.
#How do I unregister it? Oss is refusing to install because of this. Am using sarge 64bit. I do have an onboard sound card but I am sure I have disabled it.

Are you using kernel 2.4 or 2.6? If 2.4, please give serious consideration to upgrading to 2.6. If 2.6, you want to use ALSA as the driver modules are included with the kernel and OSS is deprecated.

# apt-get install alsa-base alsa-utils libesd-alsa0 libsdl1.2debian-alsa gstreamer0.8-alsa aumix-gtk
# alsaconf

(If you need a good CD Player, do apt-get install grip :-)

Unless you're really sure oss is what you want, follow Harolds advice. Post the output of lsmod if you need help blocking whatever's blocking your sound device.
