Here is some more information:
I read the other posts on this subject.
Is this problem called by not having alsa installed?
However, I'm unable to connect to the internet on Linux, because my modem doesn't seem to work with Linux. When i download the package ALSA-base and ALSA utils on a non Linux computer and transfer the .deb , and open them with KPACKAGE neither will install because they claim to be depend on each other.

Andarm16, what kind of card do you have? Try running the 'lspci' command as root to find out.
Also, check if you are a member of the 'audio' group. In order to use any sound, you should be (you can check it with the 'id' command).

hey andy,

don't know if this helps you or anyone else, but i found upgrading to the newer kernel helped. actually i simply reinstalled, using the internet install cd. at the debian splash screen, entering "linux26" will start the install for the 2.6 kernel. after that i simply follow prompts to install a desktop system.

okay, some sound support but still screwy

#8 Post by wasabee »

i think switching from 2.4 stable to 2.6 stable helped because alsa is integrated in the kernel now right? well...

-sound works in totem to play a dvd, though i noticed a lag at times (sound lag--the video was getting a few frames ahead). pausing/unpausing corrected this if it happened.

-if i click 'enable sound server' iin gnome prefs->sound, i hear this repeating cheese-grating sound, sounds a little faster than 1hz.

-gnome cd player doesn't give me sound, tho i can see the drive working.. does it just use the analog sound output of cdrom drives? cause if so i don't think i have those wires hooked up, just ide

running lspci i get

Code: Select all

VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8233/A/8235/8237 AC97 Audio Controller (rev 50)
my mobo has a chip that reads "VIA VT8235" so that must be the one i have.
alsa web page http://www.alsa-project.org/alsa-doc/do ... le=via82xx says i need the via82xx driver.
i checked out modconf and what it would say about my driver, i found it in the menu with a '+' beside it, so its installed, right?

can anyone help?
editing my post here:
i guess my audio setup is working, i'm ripping my audio cds and playing w/ xmms, no problemo.
