Newbie, Need 100% can install Debian hardware suggestion?

#1 Post by explorer1979 »

Hi all,

I am newbie in Debian, after try failed onthe install on my new PC, I feeling very unhappy, but the apt-get is really a great thing for a self learning newbie linux system admin ...

Now I decided buy a total new PC, and I am Chinese, live in Hong Kong, before, my motherboard is Gigabyte 8I915P Duo Pro with 160 WD SATA HDD running in AHCI mode.... but total install Debian failed that I try many many different way, include testing, unstable version ....

And my company also plan build a LAMP server that running
osCommerce (http://www.oscommerce.com),
SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org),
phpadsnews (http://phpadsnew.com/two/index.html)

oscommerce only run under PHP 4.x, and I need mySQL 4.1, so can't choose FC4, it is PHP 5.x ...

So, in Hong Kong, I can easy to buy motherboard brand like Asus, Gigabyte, Intel ... and WD, Maxtor HDD (IDE, or SATA) ...

I just want to avoid that this time buy a can't install Debian motherboard, since before you buy any hardware, you really don't know it will run under Debian or not, right?

So, hope here anyone can help me this newbie self-learning system admin on my first job working in Hong Kong very small business company.... give me a 100% working hardware list that I can following to buy the hardware to DIY a Debian Sarge Linux PC for my company's LAMP server ...

CPU can Intel or AMD (Not need too fast, better control at USD 100 or under, but can a bit higher than USD 100), but the price better not too high ... motherboard can Asus, Gigabyte, Intel, etc ... just need motherboard integration 100/1000Mbps network, if not also okay, I can buy a RT8139C network card easy ... or 3Com network card ..

Really thx for you time to read and reply this message.

Wish you have a nice day

Best regards,
Jimmy Chan

How did your install fail? When I installed Sarge from cds, it said something like "tried to kill init" and then froze up. I just shut it off and tried again. It didn't even try the 2.6 kernel then, it just came up with the 2.4 kernel.
