How to config Conexant AC-Link Audio (HP zv6130us)

#1 Post by djacobs »

I'm trying to make my way through installing Debian sarge amd64 on an HP Pavilion zv6130us laptop, and among the problems I'm dealing with is a failure to properly access the built-in audio card. I'm starting from ground zero, with no changes to audio config since installing the base OS without ALSA, briefly letting OSS have a go at it, but without really giving that a serious try.

Then I installed the alsa-base, alsa-headers, and alsa-utils packages, then rebooted.

Just after entering runlevel 2, I see:
Setting up ALSA...done (not loaded).
Upon logging in, in /proc/pci I see:
Bus 0, device 20, function 0:
SMBus: PCI device 1002:4372 (ATI Technologies Inc) (rev 16).
I/O at 0x8400 [0x840f].
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xb0003000 [0xb00033ff].
Bus 0, device 20, function 1:
IDE interface: PCI device 1002:4376 (ATI Technologies Inc) (rev 0).
IRQ 16.
I/O at 0x8410 [0x841f].
Bus 0, device 20, function 3:
ISA bridge: PCI device 1002:4377 (ATI Technologies Inc) (rev 0).
Bus 0, device 20, function 4:
PCI bridge: PCI device 1002:4371 (ATI Technologies Inc) (rev 0).
Master Capable. Latency=64.
Bus 0, device 20, function 5:
Multimedia audio controller: PCI device 1002:4370 (ATI Technologies Inc) (rev 1).
IRQ 17.
Master Capable. Latency=64. Min Gnt=2.
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xb0003400 [0xb00034ff].

Bus 0, device 20, function 6:
Modem: PCI device 1002:4378 (ATI Technologies Inc) (rev 1).
IRQ 17.
Master Capable. Latency=64. Min Gnt=2.
Non-prefetchable 32 bit memory at 0xb0003800 [0xb00038ff].
So the audio device is visible at bus0, dev20, func5.

Finally, on KDE startup, I get the "Informatinoal - artsmessage":
Sound server informational message:
Error while initializing sound driver:
device /dev/dsp can't be opened (No such file or directory)
The sound server will continue, using the null output device.
Does anyone have any advice on what to try next?

Thanks a lot!

No, as you can see, I haven't had any suggestions on how to proceed; I'm at a loss...
