The cdrom problem, please help
The cdrom problem, please help
The problem comes after the first system restart after successful Debian installation. After the Debian installation everything is well, I get cdrom work, but once I do restart the "hdc" file disappears from /dev/ directory forever, so cdrom can't mount anything. I'm running Debian on the 2.6.8-2-686 kernel, before I tried the 2.4... kernel and there was no problem with cdrom. Please help me if somebody has something to tell about this issue.

Try # dmesg |grep '^hd*' to see where it says your cdrom is.

I didn't understand at all.

Re: The cdrom problem, please help
When I try to access cdrom it writes me "The /dev/hdc" does not exists, on the first system start (when there is no problem with cdrom) I noticed that there is a file 'hdc' in '/dev/' and Debian mounts it as a cdrom, but after the first computer restart I don't see file 'hdc' in '/dev/' any more.glf2818 wrote:Sval

I thought that would help. When I ran # dmesg |grep '^hd*' on my system it said a lot of things (though not as much as dmesg) including:
hda: ST380013AS, ATA DISK drive
hdc: HL-DT-STDVD-ROM GDR8163B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
hdd: HL-DT-ST GCE-8487B, ATAPI CD/DVD-ROM drive
I thought perhaps your cdrom was mounted somewhere besides hdc but the link to it was still pointing to hdc. Have you run # dmesg|less and read the whole thing?
Don't give up!
