Boot from usb problem

Postby Piter_ » 2011-04-09 18:29

Hi all.
I have made a boot USB stick but cant boot my laptop from it.
In bios my BenQ A52 Joybook has 5 options hdd, dvd, netboot, USB key, USB FD.
I set USB options to the top of list, tried all 3 usb slots but no success.
If I press F9 button, which gives boot menu, it gives me only 3 choices. HDD, DVD and NET. both USB options are missing, regardless of their actual place in boot sequence list.
Any idea where to look for solution.
Thanks.
Petro

From my experience - I have never managed to boot from a USB stick.
The only thing I concluded was either the bios does not deteect the usb or the usb stick is not formatted with the boot record.
You might want to try to change the boot order so that the usb is first in the list.

PS - If you have a PSP, you can boot from the memory stick

I was able to boot if I use 1 GB stick, 2 GB 4 and 16 did not work.
Do you think it is possible to finnaly make it boot from bigger USB stick?

Interesting, I never got my 4gig usb key to work.

You could try partitioning 1gig+ disk and see if that works - i.e. partition size limited to 1gig.

Even if BIOS cannot find out the USB stick, Debian kernel may be able to find.

Edit: Even if the USB stick and/or the partition larger than 1gig in the USB stick cannot be found at boot time, Debian kernel may be able to find the USB stick and the partition, and kexec may be able to boot it.
