[SOLVED] RT 5390 still not working

Postby floriade » 2012-01-16 16:45

Hello everyone,

I installed Debian Wheezy amd64 on my new laptop and tried to install the driver for my wlan card (RT 5390 PCIe). I followed the following procedure: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=72265
Unfortunately, I am still having some problems. It looks as if the wrong modules are loaded.

lsmod:

Code: Select all
rt5390sta            1113416  0
rt2800pci              13908  0
rt2800lib              43568  1 rt2800pci
crc_ccitt              12347  1 rt2800lib
rt2x00pci              12847  1 rt2800pci
rt2x00lib              38202  3 rt2800pci,rt2800lib,rt2x00pci
...
mac80211              183047  3 rt2800lib,rt2x00pci,rt2x00lib
...
cfg80211              132703  2 rt2x00lib,mac80211
...
eeprom_93cx6           12455  1 rt2800pci

lspci --n:

Code: Select all
[02:00.0 Network controller [0280]: Ralink corp. RT5390 Wireless 802.11n 1T/1R PCIe [1814:5390]

dmesg | grep rt:

Code: Select all
[    8.057668] rt2800pci 0000:02:00.0: PCI INT A -> GSI 17 (level, low) -> IRQ 17
[    8.057679] rt2800pci 0000:02:00.0: setting latency timer to 64
[    8.082645] Registered led device: rt2800pci-phy0::radio
[    8.082661] Registered led device: rt2800pci-phy0::assoc
[    8.082676] Registered led device: rt2800pci-phy0::quality
[    9.350390] rt5390sta: module license 'unspecified' taints kernel.
[    9.353962] register rt2860

I tried blacklisting the modules which were loaded instead of rt5390sta but that didn't change anything. For some reason the correct modules are not used at all.

It would be great if you could help me. Thanks a lot.

Cheers,
Florian

It is included in the mainline Linux kernel since version 2.6.33 and replaces the rt2860sta staging driver in Wheezy and later releases.1 Firmware is required and available in the firmware-ralink package.

says http://wiki.debian.org/rt2800pci
which version is your kernel?

Hi,

uname -a:

Code: Select all
Linux asusbox 3.1.0-1-amd64 #1 SMP Tue Jan 10 05:01:58 UTC 2012 x86_64 GNU/Linux

The rt2800 driver is basically what I have now, right?

iwconfig

Code: Select all
lo        no wireless extensions.

eth0      no wireless extensions.

wlan0     IEEE 802.11bgn  ESSID:off/any
          Mode:Managed  Access Point: Not-Associated   Tx-Power=off
          Retry  long limit:7   RTS thr:off   Fragment thr:off
          Encryption key:off
          Power Management:off

iwlist scan

Code: Select all
lo        Interface doesn't support scanning.

eth0      Interface doesn't support scanning.

wlan0     Interface doesn't support scanning : Network is down

A short update:

I realized that the Wifi LED stays off, even when I press the according FN F2 combination. Some function keys are not working. Could this be the reason?
dmesg says the following after pressing FN F2:

Code: Select all
[ 1735.906268] phy0 -> rt2x00lib_request_firmware: Error - Failed to request Firmware.
[ 1738.276384] atl1c 0000:03:00.0: irq 43 for MSI/MSI-X

[ 1738.543543] atl1c 0000:03:00.0: irq 43 for MSI/MSI-X

i'm far from being a hardware/ kernel guru, but to me your problem seems to be boiling down to a configuration issue.

sorry, but that's all the advice i can give. :oops:

Okay I think I figured it out. Still don't know what went wrong.
The magic was in:

Code: Select all
sudo chown root:root rt73.bin
