Knowing that the machine has an anti-glare screen or that it weighs 3.06 pounds isn't going to help anyone diagnose a networking problem.

There are multiple reports on the interwebz of Ubuntu working on Chromebooks. So maybe try booting from an Ubuntu LiveCD and gathering the requested information.

Also specify which version of Debian you're trying to install.

Folks here can only help you if you are willing to "meet halfway."

You didn't say which version you're trying to install, even though I asked. And I'm not feeling the urge to beg, so here's a suggestion that will either work, or it won't.

In all likelihood, the shortest route to a solution is to install Wheezy. If that doesn't work for some reason, then wait until someone with more patience than I have stumbles upon your thread.

Good luck.

Dasein....

Thanks for your reply. I am sorry that patience is not one of your virtues for those of us who may not be as familiar as you are with Debian or Linux.

I apologize that I did not say that it was a stable install.

I am trying to find answers that won't require a testing install. No Ethernet port on Chromebook and limited options to install other os's (other than Chrubuntu) gives me few options without wireless working on my current stable install.

Thanks and any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi

I had a similar issue with a Samsung Netbook. Debian doesn't include the "non-free" wifi drivers for the Broadcom hardware it uses.

Try checking what wifi hardware is on your system with the command lspci in a terminal (Accessories menu). The answer should be near the foot of the response.

Then search: http://wiki.debian.org/WiFi for information about your wifi hardware.

The drivers I needed are the brcm set and the rtl_nic set. I downloaded these folders and loading Nautilus file manager using "sudo nautilus" command in a terminal (to give write priveliges) copied them into the "/lib/firmware" directory. Then on reboot the wifi worked.

Without ethernet, you will need another PC with internet access or get a friend/colleague to provide this for you.

An alternative approach: Ubuntu 12.04 should provide the drivers you need. If you install Ubuntu 12.04, and identify the drivers you need using lspci etc, you can then take a copy of them on a usb stick from /lib/firmware directory and then install Debian Squeeze. You can then copy them into /lib/firmware.

Hope this helps (if help is still needed).

Further to the previous post, I notice that you have the Atheros Communications Inc. AR9300 Wireless LAN adaptor.

See here for info:

http://wiki.debian.org/ath9k

(Ubuntu does include the driver(s) you need.)

As per http://wiki.debian.org/ath9k your device is supported by 3.2.0 or later kernels.
This means one from backports or, as dasein suggests, the easy way is simply to install wheezy (which is frozen and very close to release as stable).

Thanks for your feedback. The easiest solution it seems would be if there is a testing install script for the Samsung Series 5 x86 Chromebook. All scripts I have seen are simply for Debian Stable 6.0.3.

If you know of a testing script please let me know......

What script?
Can you not just boot a wheezy install cd or usb?

OK.
You can get the kernel from backports, transfer it via usb and install with dpkg.
You will also need to get any of the dependencies that are not satisfied by your current install.
Assuming 64 bit, see here - http://packages.debian.org/squeeze-back ... po.4-amd64

And don't forget to get the firmware-atheros package from backports and install it, too.

(forseeing the next problem).

The device uses the ath9k (for atheros 9000 devices) driver, and a way to see if the PCI ID (0168c:0030) is supported in your running kernel is to run

su -c 'modinfo ath9k'

for example with a 3.6.11 kernel:

Code: Select all

steve@hplaptop:~$ su -c 'modinfo ath9k'
Password:
filename: /lib/modules/3.6.11-stevo-generic-amd64/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ath/ath9k/ath9k.ko
