anyone able to say when a libpango that doesn't make text in anjuta unreadable will be available for sarge or testing, I've got work to do but it isn't possible to use anjuta with the existing libpango-1.8

Unless someone finds a big security issue in libpango-1.8.1, that version will stay in sarge forever.
Consider downloading and compiling the source code.
