Unable to install from a LG Sata DVD drive

#1 Post by cloudstrife »

I have a Intel E6550 Core2Duo processor with Intel DG33FB motherboard and 2 SATA hard disks and 1 SATA DVD write.
Last time I installed I had a IDE CD writer and the Debian Etch. ( Pentium 4 2.8G processor and a Intel D915GAV motherboard)
This time around after upgrading my system I am unable to install Etch.
I tried installation with:
expertgui acpi=off
It booted alright and I could set the language etc...
But when it reached "Detecting CDROM" (or something similar thing in the left handside menu) it complained of no CD drive detected and said something about drivers and stuff. I am relatively new to linux and would be grateful if reply isn't geeky.
Is this due to the upgraded system or due to the SATA DVD write or something more intricate??
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance

experimenting with the SATA options in the bios may help.

failing that I would suggest trying an unofficial installation image with a newer kernel e.g. http://kmuto.jp/debian/d-i/

Or you could try one of the official daily build testing netinstall iso's.
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily ... 86/iso-cd/

@kinematic I tried the link you gave but AMD64 architecture as this I believe ineeds a 64-bit version and I wasnt sure of is64 architecture.
It detected the DVD drive, thanks to you,
But now the ethernet controller driver is not found. It does not detect any network card.
How do I get around this?
thanks in advance

dropping in a cheap PCI nic is generally the quickest way to get the system set up, once you have a working system you can then try newer kernels and third party driver modules much more easilly than you could in the installer.

I had the exact same problem with Debian Etch so I installed Lenny which uses kernel 2.6.22 and it works very well. Pretty stable too.
