Periodic account cleanup

Have something to say about forums.debian.net itself?

Periodic account cleanup

Postby Jeroen » 2008-01-20 22:29

Hi there,

There are currently thousands of inactive and never used (or worse, only used by spammers) accounts in the forums.

I'd like to do something about this. A rough idea is the following:

- Accounts that have not seen any succesful login attempt ever, are removed in 24h (typically the email address was invalid or something during registration)
- Accounts that have no posts associated, are removed 6 months after last login
- Accounts that have only removed posts (typically: spammers), are removed in 7 days
- Accounts that have posts associated, are never removed

Advantages:
- people that fail to register properly, can retry with the same
username after 24h
- also otherwise, user account names are cleaned up, especially
spammers-accounts

Disadvantage:
- people who might use their account for just reading, will lose their account after 6 months of inactivity
- Drive-by registrations without posts will stay in the database for 6 months

I think the above system is reasonably balanced, but I'd like to seek your opinion, the opinion of active participants, on this. Please voice your opinion in this thread, or mail admin@forums.d.n if you'd rather not state it publicly.

Thanks,
--Jeroen

That seems fair to me. (That's me OK for the next 6 months :) )

Sounds reasonable to me. I worry about the 'readers' and would like to hear their opinion, but considering they are 'readers' I don't guess we will.

Glad to be asked for input concerning this matter...

It would be nice also to add something like an IP authenticity checker to prevent spammers from creating accounts via proxies and the like.

If someone posts a whole bunch of messages, but then stops posting for 6 months, would their account be terminated? If so, then could someone else register with that terminated acount's exact same username? If so, it could be confusing.

Thanks for re-emphasizing that point Jeroen, since it appeared that some respondents were under the impression that they would need to post every 6 months to keep their accounts from being deleted.
