Java Applet issues using Sun plugin (libjavaplugin_oji.so)

Postby anthony » 2008-01-22 03:06

Hello everyone,

I have a problem that I have no idea how to fix. I am running a dual booted box right now and am off at college. The network here has MAC based security and uses Cisco Clean Access.
http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps6128/

Ever since the beginning of the year I have had major issues with internet and have since ironed out most of the problems, but after Christmas break new issues arrived with logging onto the network with Debian. I used to be able to log on via browser and then log out as I pleased, but when switching between windows and Debian I have to log out in order to log into the other.

For instance if i wanted to re-install Debian via netinstall disc i would have to already be logged into a Gnu/Linux system in order to pull packages of the ftp.

So I have a recently fresh install of Debian but in order to log on to the network i muse have the JRE/Java Applet installed. I get re-directed to this page upon opening up a browser

Cisco Clean Access Java Applet web client could NOT be launched. The reasons for this might include:

* Java Plug-in is not installed in your browser.
* Java Applet is disabled in your browser's security settings.

And you might be able to fix this by

* Download and install Java Plug-in from here
* Enable Java Applet in your browser's security settings.

If you cannot run the Cisco Clean Access Java Applet web client, you will not be able to access this network. Please contact the systems administrator

So..
I from here logged into windows and pulled this file for installation

jre-6u3-linux-amd64

i then restarted the Browser and get the message

Loading Cisco Clean Access Java Applet............

Cisco Clean Access Java Applet web client could NOT be launched

and here I am.

Sorry If I am souding a little torked off but Its a pain in the butt especially with an IT department that doesnt no how to help the Gnu/Linux users. The last time I had network issues the told me I probably had a virus :/

The only reason I am requesting help here is because the IT department wont find time to make it up to my room let alone fill my request for help. ( This has happened before )

I am not an expert with linux by any means but I can post any other information needed to help me solve this problem. My fiancee is running Ubuntu and is in the exact situation. Perhaps I did something wrong when installing JRE?? I have know idea, please post any suggestions if you have them!

thanks

If you're using an AMD64 machine, the best way to get Java to work is from Blackdown: viewtopic.php?t=21334

I know the title is "Java applets", but it also installs the JRE.

Hope this helps.

thanks for the reply, i kindof got it working yesterday and installed by installing the java.bin file in /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ and /usr/lib/firefox/plugins/ (something like that I am posting from a dirferent machine). This caused it to work but after a reboot it couldnt load that applet anymore. I really have no idea what is going on, your method seems good but i have to log in to the network before i can even access those packages from that source. Now it just crashes with a bug report

Don't have an answer for you, but my experiences with Cisco Java applets -particlarly those for configuring routers- don't inspire the slightest confidence in me.

Every pro tells you to config Cisco routers by telnet, because the Java apps they release are near-to useless. After wasting hours over this, I came round to their viewpoint!

Not that it helps you here, of course.

How much space do you have? You might download the DVD image, then either burn that or use that as the installation media from the hard drive. I would suggest using jigdo to get the iso.

From the debian installation howto:
A.2.5. Booting from hard disk

It's possible to boot the installer using no removable media, but just an existing hard disk, which can have a different OS on it. Download hd-media/initrd.gz, hd-media/vmlinuz, and a Debian CD image to the top-level directory of the hard disk. Make sure that the CD image has a filename ending in .iso. Now it's just a matter of booting linux with the initrd. Section 5.1.2, “Booting from Linux Using LILO or GRUB” explains one way to do it.

Make sure that the CD image has a filename ending in .iso. dont really know what you are getting at
---------------------------------------------

and i have reason to believe that the problem is specifcally with the jre I was using. As you saw above the plugins listed GCJ. I read that those dont work 100 percent of the time and on some pages (such as the log-on page at school) Is one of those pages that it just wont work with.
then last night I tried this

So now the plug ins list java and still dont work. My friend got this working
in 32 bit ubuntu my installing restricted stuff from the repository. It just flat out worked. This gives me reason to believe that I should be able to resolve this.

after that failure I also tried this --

Bongzilla:/usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins# update-alternatives --config java

There are 2 alternatives which provide `java'

I did this at 4 in the morning so I see that now it could have been a permission issue as to why that wouldnt link.

BUT i have read that

"Also worth noting, the Sun Java 1.5.0 for AMD64 doesn't have the Java web browser plugin currently available, so for browsers that access Java through that plugin, one cannot currently view Java applets with the Sun Java 1.5.0 for AMD64.suggest using the Blackdown Java 1.4.2 for AMD64 if you want to have Java support in such browsers."

I dont know if this is 100% correct.

IF the newest version of the jre that is released from SUN will work for 64 bit with the ability to view java applets I think that this will work. The problem is that the instructions are misleading as the directory structure of the folder contents is not at all like the on for the 32 bit version.

mine was located here

/usr/lib/j2re1.6-sun/lib/amd64/libjava.so and thats not even oji.so like the 32 bit version and the one in the blackdown directory for amd644.

my other option is chroot i suppose but i was having a hard time understanding some of the how-tos. I had a sid chroot set up and running but could not figure out how to run iceweasel through it. After I chrooted the chroot directory and executed firefox command, the root firefox appeared and not on fron the 32 bit install. I would also like to avoid running the full chroot if possible because it did end up to be about 400 MB of space and that seems like a lot just to get the internet working.

I will do this if i must but i want to have an easy time installing the 32 bit plugins.

please let me know what you guys think, I am getting closer every day.

Try this:

Download the 64-bit Java JRE file from here.

Code: Select all
apt-get install java-package
su user
fakeroot make-jpkg <DOWNLOADED FILENAME>
logout
dpkg -i *.deb

If not, this page may help: http://www.debianhelp.co.uk/debianjava.htm

thanks for the reply but I guess 64 bit is not supported anymore at the campus? (just from what I was told by the network admin)
He told me to install 32-bit and symbolic link the libjavaplugin_oji.so into

/home/<user>/.mozilla/plugins/

instead of /usr/lib/iceweasel/plugins/ and /usr/lib/mozilla/plugins/ as I thought

The source of the problem is the proprietary Sun plugin and nothing more. This is also the only thing that will work in order to load the applet on the log-in page. He also told me that chroot would not work (no clue) and to just install the 32 bit version of linux. I have tried the amd64 fakeroot and made the.deb but that did not work. I also tried the method on an
Ubuntu 32bit laptop and linked to /home/<user>/.mozilla/plugins/ and did not work but i think there were permission issues since after i linked and listed the plugins in the directory that one was highlighted in black with red text.

A friend in my hall got it working through dumb luck in ubuntu by adding the restricted repository in Ubuntu but he said that he had no clue how he did it. Also that was a laptop and he had the option to use openwireless.

Could someone please help me understand why I have to put it into the .mozilla directory? this does not make sense to me since that is not the way to do it on sun's site. Also if i try creating the .deb file will it link everything for me in the correct places?

I would really appreciate any help on this because I have not had internet working in Debian since I got back from Christmas break.

remember that I have no access to wireless because of it being a Desktop and am not in range of any networks via wireless. So I cannot use apt.

Does anyone have input on this whole .mozilla directory thing?

Please tell me what you think and see if you know if a solution.

Also to clarify, this admin said that Blackdown and gcj will not work In any way and must be from Sun's site.

thanks for following up on this thread
