#1 Post by craig_debian »

This a new install of Debian (sarge)

The print options within programs like "gedit" attempt to use "lp" to print. Nothing happens though.

Quesion: I have a HP 1210V printer and scanner on a USB line to the system
If I #apt-get install cups
Will it auto-configure for this printer.
if this doesn't auto-configure then where can I find instructions on how to make the necessary configurations to CUPS?

You might try:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/
It mentions a new cups tutorial.
You might also want to read about gutenprint.

Another mile stone !

I got my HP 1210v printer working via CUPS.

# apt-get install cupsys
installed cupsd
# apt-get install gs-gpl
installed gostscripts
http://www.linuxprinting.org/
told me where I could get the following *.ppd file
# chown root:root HP-PSC_1210-hpijs.ppd
made sure the sytem could open it
At this point I thought I had everything installed. I had run http://localhost:631 and setup the printer. But nothing happened with a print command.
I realized by reading the docs at www.linuxpring.org that I didn't have a postcript or raster printer... I need to install the following file
# apt-get install foomatic-db-hpijs
Then back at http://localhost:631 I ran the test print and it works!

I just discovered that now the printer isn't working... the error reports
"Unable to open USB device "usb://Hewlett-Packard/psc%201200%20series?serial=MY35UC647N5H": No such device"
nothing from within the localhost/631 seems to be able to reactivate the printer ?

edit: 2/17
I've discovered that stopping and stating the printer from within localhost/631 I can get the printer to work... I have not discovered exactly the sequence that gets it working... but at least there is a way around the problem
