Non-Deb package help needed

Postby rogleale » 2004-10-20 12:19

Hi All,
I am running Debian3.02 and waiting for my Sarge CD's to arrive. I have a big problem with the installation of packages, and feel really
stupid because I must be missing something really simple through not being familiar with the command line.
My printer is a Canon i850, not supported by Linux, so I downloaded the trial version of Turboprint, both as .tgz and .rpm. I now need
advice on how to install one of these packages because I have tried for hours and got nowhere. I copied these packages to my home/temp
directory, (which must be wrong!) - su to root - cd to home/roger/temp/turboprint-1.90-1.i386.rpm - bash: no such file or directory,and the same happens with the .tgz package.
Would some expert be kind enough to detail, command by command, how can I can install one of these packages frpm CD/ROM, and the
correct directory to copy them into to start with.
Very grateful for any help.

apt-get install alien fakeroot (and suggested packages)
then as normal user ; fakeroot alien package.rpm
you get a package.deb ; install it dpkg -i package.deb;
read the instructions on the site or in /usr/share/doc
