usb disk is nt recognized on debian lenny

Postby sorcerer » 2008-05-04 13:27

On my Debian Lenny installation, I plug in any usb flash disk and it is recognized. I can access the device with fdisk and mount it.

But, my USD IDE hdd is not recognized. Below are the logs from messages file.

I don't have a problem on this disk because it gets recognized on a different server with CentOS.

The Centos server has 2.6.18 kernel and the Debian server has 2.6.24 kernel.

How can I make the device get recognized on my Debian Lenny server ?

Is it listed in your fstab?

something like this:
/dev/sdb1 /data1 ntfs rw,user,noauto 0 0

with correct file system etc.

I am not trying to mount it because when I try to reach it with "fdisk" , I can't.
While on the other system (CentOS) I can reach the partition table and change it.

I don't have it installed, I can install and try.
But I don't understand what will it help.
The system does not read the partition table as it says in the logs.

Is it an NTFS drive? If so, do you have ntfs-3g package installed?

guys,

The drive's filesystem is not important at the moment.
I don't want to mount it. I just want to reach it with fdisk so that I will be able to partition it.
My problem is reaching the disk partition table, not mounting it.

Dear sorcerer,
I am not expert on this field but try to see what is possible wrong with this USB HDD by running testdisk as root (if you don't have just ask apt-get install testdisk)

Best Regards,
Mike Kranidis

P.S. If it is possible try different IDE-to-USB case, this might be the root of problem

There might not be enough power from the usb port on the lenny server. Does the hd have an external power supply option?

I assume the usb port has enough power because I can feel the disks turning.
But I will try the external power as suggested.

I will also try the testdisk suggestion.

Thanks
