No fonts after dist upgrade
No fonts after dist upgrade
Hi!
Today I've made update of my Debian testing... After that I've lost fonts in my Gnome... There are all of menus, but all of them are blank. Also, there are no icons visible on desktop... Anyway: I remember where are few of them... If I doule-click this place they start what they are supposed to - still with no text.
Have you any idea how to fix this? I can still run consoles with ctrl+alt+F1...F6 as root.

I've checked my /etc/xorg.conf - I'm supprised there is nothing about fonts. Is it normal?

My problem is still the same, but I've done some researches... What I've noticed is at almost every dist-upgrade in aptitude or synaptics make this errors:
I searched for "cid" in aptitude and found this package: x-ttcidfont-conf. I've done
# dpkg-reconfigure x-ttcidfont-conf
and... Nothing... Still no fonts in my X...
I've also found logfile from apt-get/aptitude/synaptic: /var/log/apt/term.log
Anybody with any idea?

I've got the same problem. I'm away from that machine at the moment, so can't check anything, though.
The problem occurred after an update, then also a fresh testing netinst install when I couldn't *see* anything to fix the problem.
The problem affects X -- KDE and Gnome are largely fontless. emacs and gnome-terminal still show fixed-width fonts. Gnome doesn't show any of its pixmaps, icons, etc either.
My other machine is also running testing, and isn't showing these problems. I'm tempted to point the finger at something screwy with the X server and my onboard graphics hardware (some Intel chipset; can't remember details off-hand). But, alas, I do not know.

Then remove xorg.conf. Reboot (or do Alt + Ctrl + Backspace). This will tell you if Xorg finds your defaults. You need a backup because your boot might hang and then you are nowhere until you put xorg.conf back in place.
Also, you probably have an older xorg.conf that is no longer in use. It will look like xorg.conf.20070924014843. Try substituting it for your present one and reboot. If this works and your new one does not, then you have an answer.
Also, I would do another update and dist-upgrade just to see if that would fix it.
Have you tried any of the windowmakers? Xfce, Icewm, Openbox? Do they have the same problem?

Yes. Xorg does fonts by default. However, if you have some exceptions, you might want them in there. Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see what is happening when Xorg boots.
Two experiments you can try:
[code]# cp xorg.conf xorg.conf.backup

I will this evening and I'll post results. Now I have to use this machine under Windows ;/Bulkley wrote:Yes. Xorg does fonts by default. However, if you have some exceptions, you might want them in there. Check /var/log/Xorg.0.log to see what is happening when Xorg boots.

About deleting xorg.conf: I'm doing dist-upgrades often (as I've written previously) so I've got one of the newest version of X.Org. As I read in others topics there might be problem with this file. I mean: are you sure it's still in use?

A dist-upgrade might not update your xorg.conf. Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't. At the very least, try substituting one of the old ones.
Check your font files. Make sure they are all there. It is just possible that some of them have been removed in an upgrade and you didn't notice. Come to think of it, reinstalling font files wouldn't hurt.
Yeah... What is disturbing me is that I saw font-files in so many places that I cannot imagine where they really should be... Anyway: Which directories are really important?Bulkley wrote:Check your font files. Make sure they are all there. Debian no puts most of them in /usr/share/fonts/ although there are usually some elsewhere. I would just go through the fonts you think you have and re-install some of them. Pick a few that you can use as a test.hafilip84 wrote:Yeah... What is disturbing me is that I saw font-files in so many places that I cannot imagine where they really should be... Throwing in my two pennies, but try reloading the font cache (as root):
Code: Select all
fc-cache -fv
Okay, from a clean slate (latest Etch release), I update x.org, since the i810 drivers included in stable don't understand my widescreen display. Prior to update: fonts and icons visible. Post update: no fonts or icons visible (but I do at least got the correct screen resolution ).
Upgrading to xserver-xorg-video-intel seems to cause my problems.
This is my work machine, so I can't spend all too long digging and exploring for answers. But all fingers at my end are pointing to something bad relating to video drivers.
X.org appears to be finding fonts correctly, though it doesn't see any truetype fonts. Should there be any? Also, the fonts issue doesn't explain the lack of pixmaps in Gnome.

I'm having the same problem. With the same video hardware. I've done some Googling around without much of an answer. It seems to be an issue that pops up from time to time but with different causes.
The easiest troubleshooting approach is to start simply. If you have access to a "live" distro, try it. That will eliminate hardware issues.
Then, boot to single user mode. After that 'startx'. Pay attention to any warnings. When you get to your login screen choose a window manager. Don't go into your usual Desktop; you want to eliminate Gnome or Kde as part of the problem. Examine your logs: Xorg.0.log and dmesg especially. Write down any warnings that you see so that you have a record.
Sorry if this seems rather basic. I spent many years as a technician for a very large company and found that the best way to troubleshoot is to get a cup of fresh coffee and sit down and think it through and then split the problem into simple bits.

It's not a hardware issue, that much is for sure. I've been using this box for about a year without issue. A re-install of Debian got things going again, but the drivers in stable don't understand my widescreen monitor. But when I update the drivers, I lose fonts and pixmaps.Bulkley wrote:The easiest troubleshooting approach is to start simply. If you have access to a "live" distro, try it. There are no warnings in my Xorg.0.log, though it does complain about a missing font package or two. Nothing that I'd guess would be a showstopper:
I get a few lines like:

I'm afraid I don't have much time to burn on this problem, as I'll be out of the office probably until the middle of next week.
