"Firefox" vs. "Iceweasel"

If none of the more specific forums is the right place to ask

"Firefox" vs. "Iceweasel"

Postby EMD » 2008-05-13 06:08

I'm just curious to know how many problems are solved by changing the value of the general.useragent.extra.firefox preference from "Iceweasel/2.0.0.X" to "Firefox/2.0.0.X"

I recently discovered that the switch enables you to enlarge enlarge a Google Map by making the left pane smaller. The switch was also necessary to enable another member of these forums to log into his bank website.

Have you had similar experiences?

I don't see what the big deal is really. Firefox is Open Source, but just contains some proprietary elements like artwork and a talk back agent I don't even use.

Right now I'm just too torn between FF and Opera...

Nice answer. Wrong question.

The question is: "How many problems are solved by changing the value of the general.useragent.extra.firefox preference from 'Iceweasel/2.0.0.X' to 'Firefox/2.0.0.X'?"

The question assumes that you are using Iceweasel and are having trouble at various sites because the browser identifies itself as "Iceweasel" instead of "Firefox."

CNN video doesn't want to play in Firefox or Iceweasel 3.0Beta so I had to change it to Firefox 2.0.0.x (not sure if it would accept Iceweasel...)

I know I had that for a while, right now I have Firefox 3.0 b5 compiled by me and Iceweasel 3.0 b5, just to check which one is working better. Personally to me Firefox/Iceweasel 2.0 is unusable, I prefer Opera to it. Firefox 3.0 performance is acceptable.

Thanks for bringing this thread back on topic.

CNN is really weird. They claim that you have to use MS Windows or a Mac to watch CNN Live, but you can get the live stream by placing mms://a466.l3760651364.c37606.g.lm.akam ... ctor:51364 in Gxine, Kaffeine or MPlayer.

Let me correct my first assertion, if I set the user agent to Firefox/3.0b5 CNN embedded video play just fine with Iceweasel the page says that the browser is not supported, which sucks....

Damn you Adrian! I was perfectly happy with my Iceweasel 2.0, but you had to go and tempt me to play with the Firefox 3 beta! Grrr!

... and I haven't stopped playing for three hours now!

For a while I tried to be somewhat idealistic about it and sent emails to sites causing problems with Iceweasel. I told them about the problem with checking the useragent, that Iceweasel was the same as Firefox and that they should include it in their 'optimization' scripts.

Usually I got a replay saying "Iceweaasel? Never heard of it. Does it run under windows? If not we can not test it"... that is, if I got a reply at all.

So I quit being idealistic and set my UA permanently to FF...

Iceweasel(and Epiphany) should just, by default, call themself FF if a site asks. All three use Gecko. Hell, maybe Mozilla ought to just change FF it use that as its identifier and save us all the legal grey.[/i]

A quick trick: I run both Iceweasel 2.0.0.14 and Firefox 3.5, and if you aren't careful they will screw up each other's profiles and preferences. So create two profiles, and change the startup commands in your menus to look like this:
iceweasel --no-remote -P telemachus
/opt/firefox/firefox --no-remote -P achilles

Your profile names and the location of your Firefox may vary :)

The -P option allows you to pick the profile you want to use, and the --no-remote option tells the browser not to connect to a "running" Iceweasel or Firefox. That allows you to run both browsers at one time and still keep your preferences clean.

For the record, though, I pretty much never open Iceweasel any more.
