Yet another apt-get update problem

#1 Post by mcflurry4321 »

I know there have been a ton of these questions asked lately, but I have yet to find a solution the the particular problem that I am having. So here goes:

When I run apt-get update, it seems like it is connecting and downloading something, but then a ton of text comes on-screen and then it says:

W: Couldn't stat source package list ..... and then it goes on to list the package.

It has several of those, and then at the end it says:

W: You may want to run apt-get update to correct these problems
E: Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones used instead.

Anyone know what's up?

We need to see the whole log. Which index file failed to download?

OK I am very confused about all of this. I'm not typing this on the actual computer with Debian on it. I don't have a GUI of any kind, because I don't even know how and I don't think I even can right now because my apt thing isn't working. I am doing everything in base Debian. I can't get into my Windows, and haven't been able to for several days now since I installed Debian. I have the XMNT2002.exe error whenever I try to boot to Windows, and then it restarts. I don't know what to do....

As for what index file failed to download, I don't even know what an index file is.

Well, just ignore the error for now - we can find out later.

Just go and run:

apt-get install x-window-system-core kde kdm

That will give you a graphical environment.

OK I just downloaded that and now it is asking me to tell it a repository for something. What do I put?

OK I got past that part and I answered all of the questions about my keyboard and mouse etc, but now after it unpacked and setup everything, the same error I am having with the apt-get update occured.

K nevermind. I fixed that part. But now it is already downloaded, so how do I install and begin using it?

Just reboot and KDM should start.

That error is actually more of a warning saying something couldn't download.

Yeah, I changed the repos in my sources.list and it worked. Thanks for your help there.

Now about my "XMNT2002.exe not found" problem that isn't allowing me to boot to Windows. I have found that file in my System32 folder. So why can't it find it? It also says an autochk program can't be found. It says that right under the other error. Then it just restarts my computer.

Yeah, I found that site, but I can't actually get into Windows to edit the registry.

Well, that's a question for the Windows forums, not the Debian ones :)
