Driver for 82801JI (ICH10 Family) HD Audio Controller ?

Hello

I've just installed Debian 5.01 i386 on my new computer, but i have no sound. When i play a mp3 with vlc, no error appears, but there's no sound.
My motherboard is an ASUSTEK P5QL/EPU with a Northbridge=P43 Express and Southbridge=ICH10

So my question is: where to looks for the appropriate driver ?
I've searched this page: http://wiki.debian.org/DeviceDatabase/PCI but no trace of an HD Audio Controller.

Make sure sound modules are loaded.

lsmod | grep snd
should show a great whack of them..
Post output here, if you wish.

Then try editing or modifying /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf with a line specific to your card -- as shown below.

Make a backup first

Example:

cp /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf_backup
echo "options snd-hda-intel probe_mask=1 model=6stack-dell" >> /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf

I have searched the forum and installed a LOT of packages (alsa*, linux-sound-base, etc) without really knowing what i was doing...but still no sound

Sometimes a more recent kernel does help, but first try a few other things

Check the obvious --- things like is there output from headphone jack?

Run a low-level sound test:

speaker-test -c2

<ctrl><c> aborts

view names of audio modules
Code: Select all
cat /proc/asound/modules

Check card chipset
Code: Select all
cat /proc/asound/card0/codec#* | grep Codec

Then see if it shows up in this list -- http://www.kernel.org/doc/Documentation ... Models.txt

And don't forget to confirm all audio channels are active:
run ncurses alsamixer in a terminal,
Code: Select all
alsamixer
and make sure 'master', 'pcm', 'front', 'surround', 'center', 'lfe', 'side', 'cd' are unmuted

Finally, please post output of

Couple more things to try before grabbing a newer kernel from backports..

Try editing /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base (which is alsa-base.conf in Squeeze/Sid)

Make a backup copy first, of course --

then edit the file using nano or your favorite plain-text editor

Try something like the following at the 'Prevent abnormal drivers from grabbing index 0' stanza:

Thanks for posting the information. It reveals the sound card isn't being recognized correctly.

A bit more Google suggests the sound chip on your machine isn't supported by Lenny's alsa (version 1.0.17)

You could try backports for a newer alsa-base, and it'll likely be necessary to install a newer kernel so the system can load appropriate modules.

I generally avoid backports, because it has broken things for me previously during subsequent dist-upgrades from, for example, stable to testing. If you plan to do an upgrade to testing at some point, be prepared to encounter a few hiccups, or just back up all your data and do a fresh install.
