How to delete virus with AVG?

#1 Post by miros84 »

Hello
I use AVG on my computer.
I run it this way:

Code: Select all

avgscan -arc /home/miros
So, I found what in folder miros I had 4 virus that I put to test the antivirus.
When scanning finished, It says it found the virus, but havenot got any option to delete it?
I scan again later and the virus is still there.
How can I delete it with AVG. Is there some option?

Does it come with a manual?

Perhaps it might not be meant to delete viruses, only to detect them, there's the old "rm" that does wonders in removing files...
Ubuntu hate is a mental derangement.

No, they should pay me to install their software on my system.

Wow! AVG is such an amazing application that it not only detected the 4 viruses, but also must have noticed that you had deliberately placed them there, and therefore wanted to keep them!

Seriously, the only time you're likely to need anti-virus is if you're running a mail or file server distributing data to winduhs clients. If that's the case, you need look no farther than clamav, which is available in the official Debian repositories

Code: Select all

~$ aptitude show clamav
Package: clamav
State: not installed
Version: 0.95.3+dfsg-1
Priority: optional
Section: utils
Maintainer: ClamAV Team <pkg-clamav-devel@lists.alioth.debian.org>
Uncompressed Size: 520k
Depends: libc6 (>= 2.7), libclamav6 (>= 0.95.3+dfsg), libtommath0, zlib1g (>= 1:1.1.4), clamav-freshclam | clamav-data
Recommends: clamav-base
Suggests: clamav-docs
Description: anti-virus utility for Unix - command-line interface
Clam AntiVirus is an anti-virus toolkit for Unix. The main purpose of this software is the integration with mail servers
(attachment scanning). The package provides a flexible and scalable multi-threaded daemon in the clamav-daemon package, a
command-line scanner in the clamav package, and a tool for automatic updating via the Internet in the clamav-freshclam
package. The programs are based on libclamav6, which can be used by other software.

This package contains the command line interface. Features:
* built-in support for various archive formats, including Zip, Tar, Gzip, Bzip2, OLE2, Cabinet, CHM, BinHex, SIS and
others;
* built-in support for almost all mail file formats;
* built-in support for ELF executables and Portable Executable files compressed with UPX, FSG, Petite, NsPack, wwpack32,
MEW, Upack and obfuscated with SUE, Y0da Cryptor and others;
* built-in support for popular document formats including Microsoft Office and Mac Office files, HTML, RTF and PDF.

For scanning to work, a virus database is needed. There are two options for getting it:
* clamav-freshclam: updates the database from Internet. This is recommended with Internet access.
* clamav-data: for users without Internet access. The package is not updated once installed. The clamav-getfiles package
allows creating custom packages from an Internet-connected computer.

Please resist the temptation to install applications from outside the official repos. It's not normally necessary, and often leads to problems.

I know Linux doesnot need antovirus, but I need for other job.
I have some HDD with windows files, so I want to conect them to my debian system and scan them, because if I conect them to windows system, I could pass virus from one system to another, that's why, I prefer to scan my HDD with debian.
So, which is the best free antivirus for debian that can find and remove antivirus???
Is that clamav?

Ah, I was joking about AVG's psychic abilities...

Sorry.

The best way to remove viruses within a Linux environment is to simply delete them as they occur. Once a file has been identified, it is usually a simple matter to delete it or render it harmless by mangling its code.

clamav is, afaik, the preferred choice for scanning files in general, and there are some gui frontends available, such as klamav for kde

To get a better idea of what's available in the repos, do

Code: Select all

apt-cache search virus
There are quite a few tools specifically for web, file and mail servers. For example, sanitizer

To see a brief description of a particular package, type apt-cache show <packagename> For example :
~$ apt-cache show sanitizer
Package: sanitizer
Priority: optional
Section: mail
Installed-Size: 856
Maintainer: Alberto Gonzalez Iniesta <agi@inittab.org>
Architecture: all
Version: 1.76-3
Depends: perl
Recommends: procmail, maildrop
Filename: pool/main/s/sanitizer/sanitizer_1.76-3_all.deb
Size: 181816
MD5sum: ad7998186dd0cf7207cb565d3e33ef58
SHA1: 29295c3ec13f327d0d885e3f24b87bc086dc7df6
SHA256: 680e45cd3313659da84246044c1e25f2dffab712710291c89ae77236975351c0
Description: The Anomy Mail Sanitizer - an email virus scanner
The Anomy sanitizer is what most people would call "an email virus scanner".
That description is not totally accurate, but it does cover one of the more
important jobs that the sanitizer can do for you - it can scan email
attachments for viruses. Other things it can do:
.
Disable potentially dangerous HTML code, such as javascript, within
incoming email.
.
Protect you from email-based break-in attempts which exploit bugs in
common email programs (Outlook, Eudora, Pine, ...).
.
Block or "mangle" attachments based on their file names. This way if you
don't *need* to receive e.g. visual basic scripts, then you don't have to
worry about the security risk they imply (the ILOVEYOU virus was a
visual basic program). This lets you protect yourself and your users
from whole classes of attacks, without relying on complex, resource
intensive and outdated virus scanning solutions.

Try

Code: Select all

apt-get install nautilus-clamscan

It'll pickup the depends it needs(clamav clamav-base clamav-freshclam libclamav6 libtommath0 python-clamav python-nautilus) and allow you to use nautilus to find the virii that you're trying to isolate, by directory. Also,

Code: Select all

apt-get install clamtk
is an option, which is more in line with other AV software out there. I can't provide you a lot of support for either, but they're both pretty user friendly, as free Linux software goes. You can always post in here if you have specific questions, I'll track this thread.
