Howto change basic sources.list to unstable etc...

#1 Post by whoop »

I am running debian 5.0 lenny.
My /etc/apt/sources.list looks like this:

Code: Select all

#
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.3 _Lenny_ - Official amd64 CD Binary-1 200909$

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.3 _Lenny_ - Official amd64 CD Binary-1 2009090$

deb http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ lenny main
deb-src http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ lenny main

deb http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ lenny/updates main

deb http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile lenny/volatile main
deb-src http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile lenny/volatile main
I couldn't find out how to "exactly" change this file to turn the install into unstable (documentation states: change stable to unstable ?)

So my question is:
Can somebody please change my sources.list so that it reflects unstable, also that it reflects testing? I'm sure it is really easy (possibly by changing lenny to sid or squeeze or something), but it isn't documented clear enough (in my opinion) to be sure.

Thanks...

Edit anyone interested:
check the sources.list and explanations by bugsbunny in one of the next posts.
specially bout security/volatile.

Code: Select all

#
# deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.3 _Lenny_ - Official amd64 CD Binary-1 200909$

#deb cdrom:[Debian GNU/Linux 5.0.3 _Lenny_ - Official amd64 CD Binary-1 2009090$

deb http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main
deb-src http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ squeeze main

deb http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ squeeze/updates main

deb http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile squeeze/volatile main
deb-src http://volatile.debian.org/debian-volatile squeeze/volatile main

deb http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ sid main
deb-src http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ sid main
a) i`m not that sure bout the security and volatile stuff, but i checked
b) you sure you want that? why? if yes have a look at rickh`s how-to:
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php? ... ilit=mixed
c) i usually change the repos, apt-get update, and install apt-get install aptitude dpkg python perl... or similar,
once thats done apt-get upgrade, once thats done apt-get dist-upgrade, once that's done i deal with the trouble (if any, usually not, sometimes re-installation)

ps: of course wait a bit... it works for me, but i might be corrected.

Why? if you do not even know how to change your sources.list then you definitely do not know Debian well enough to either run a mixed system or to run sid.

Please Read: the sid FAQ http://wooledge.org/~greg/sidfaq.html or http://weda.mine.nu/sidfaq.html (mirror)

if you must have sid your best bet is to install sidux. At least then you will get support in Irc.

Don't worry about me, I'm not a beginner. Maybe I just posted in the wrong forum (I did that because I am just new to using debian, not nix in general). I have read the faq and I don't need support in case of breakage.
The documentation is not really clear about this point in my opinion, and as you can see in this thread I guessed it just about right. Just about is not right enough for me though.

I won't be running it on production machines or anything, so again don't worry.

Read the rickh howto. I assume you basically want to run testing but have sid available. Assuming you want to run testing as a rolling release don't use squeeze in sources.list, use testing. You can use sid or unstable - that one doesn't matter since sid's name never changes.

volatile is a non-issue. Anything that would come from volatile you can just pin to sid. security is available for testing. So, based on your current sources.list

Code: Select all

deb http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ testing main
deb-src http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ testing main

deb http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ unstable main
deb-src http://ftp.nl.debian.org/debian/ unstable main

deb http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main
deb-src http://security.debian.org/ testing/updates main
Next Run the following (all as root):

Code: Select all

echo APT::Default-Release \"testing\"\; >/etc/apt/apt.conf.d/00defaultrelease
aptitude update
aptitude install aptitude apt dpkg
aptitude safe-upgrade
aptitude full-upgrade

In that sources.list file, change "lenny" to "testing".

Better still, duplicate that "deb http://.... line; and move the "testing" line at the top. "lenny" line is at the bottom. Next, move the "cd" lines to the bottom, the "deb-src" and security lines come last - with "testing", they are irrelevant.

Rune apt-get update.

Install apt, aptitude, dpkg, base-files, and base-passwd. That will also pull in the required dependencies, and also break your system....

But that is the price you need to pay for using testing.

Stick to that config for some weeks; before replacing "lenny" with testing and "testing" with "sid" aka "unstable".

Read the advice posted by others carefully. Remember, that if your system breaks, you keep all the parts. And also that you cannot sue us. ;-P

I'd have to second the sidux install. Also not sure what you're worried about a production machine for since you've stated you wouldn't need support anyway. I've run sidux on my main box that runs my business holds all my important documents for over two years now. NO reason to be afraid to just get the distro you want and run it.

I, too, would suggest sidux, very slick distro!

-based on debian sid
-great support

It just doesn't get any better. You could of course run debian sid with smxi support, if you wanted to.

You have to love the choices .......... ahhhh linux!

sidux as a distro is fine. The devs are a bunch of pompous a-holes who are spreading a bunch of FUD about certain aspects of the system either because they're too lazy or too set in there existing ways to figure out something "new" (I won't say they're incompetent, because they're obviously not - or at least not within certain limited functionality). Basically they're attitude sucks.

Besides you really don't need sidux - it does nothing you can't do yourself - although I still recommend testing +sid over pure sid (or pure testing for that matter) IF you do your due diligence in terms of upgrades. The ability to pull from sid can resolve outstanding issues in testing. The ability to not accept a sid version can eliminate problems found in sid usually flagged by a bug report before it hits testing, which is why apt-bugs should be required for this type of install).

I like the sidux xfce disk as a live cd though.
You could of course run debian sid with smxi support, if you wanted to.
You do realize that smxi is verboten per the sidux devs?

That's why it so great. :) Along with inxi, exoodles and the other nifty scripts h2 comes up with.

The sidux devs didn't like smxi because h2 wouldn't give them control of it. so slam and others ranted about it being a rootkit because it updates itself when you run it.They even went on a banning spree in #sidux and banned anyone that even mentioned it back in April, then removed any post in the sidux forum that mentioned it. The new xorg in sid broke fglrx and h2 had smxi update within an hour so it would install again. Now those evil enough to use smxi hang out in #smxi or #linux-smokers-club on irc.oftc.net.
