very low ram usage?

#1 Post by craigevil »

CPU[-Single core Intel Pentium 4 (UP) clocked at 2793.147 Mhz-] Kernel[-2.6.32-3.dmz.2-liquorix-686 i686-] Up[-1 day-]
Mem[-65.2/493.0MB-] HDD[-160.0GB(15.9% used)-] Procs[-104-] Client[-Irssi 0.8.14-] inxi[-1.3.1-]

Notice how little ram is actually being used?

This is in debian sid with lxde, lxterminal+irssi+shell+fm, parcelite, pcmanfm, , uzbl and all the usual lxde stuff running.
Fully updated with the latest sid updates.

Its obviously not a bad thing just curious if anyone knows how or why the system is using so little ram.

And yes "free" reports the same thing as does top.

wondering if anyone with Intel that is using the liquorix kernel is getting similar ram usage. Or it has something to do with preload/prelink.

i installed the liqourix and booted into it: memory usage is about 120MB.
with the other kernel it was 145MB.
apps are: conky, gnome-terminal, xmms2 and iceweasel. uptime is different (about two hours and the liquorix about two minutes).
prelink and preload are installed, intel-inside.
ps_mem.py, the culprits (> 1MB), for liquorix:

Code: Select all

  1.0 MiB + 217.0 KiB = 1.2 MiB	cupsd
  1.2 MiB + 225.0 KiB = 1.4 MiB	console-kit-daemon
  1.1 MiB + 497.5 KiB = 1.6 MiB	conky
  1.9 MiB + 260.5 KiB = 2.2 MiB	gconfd-2
  2.8 MiB + 123.5 KiB = 2.9 MiB	hald
  4.6 MiB + 773.5 KiB = 5.3 MiB	bash (3)
  3.8 MiB + 2.5 MiB = 6.2 MiB	gnome-terminal
  7.5 MiB + 45.5 KiB = 7.5 MiB	preload
  7.4 MiB + 381.0 KiB = 7.8 MiB	Xorg
 11.5 MiB + 835.0 KiB = 12.3 MiB	xmms2d
 14.7 MiB + 987.0 KiB = 15.7 MiB	enlightenment
 49.4 MiB + 2.6 MiB = 52.0 MiB	icecat-bin
---------------------------------
                        128.1 MiB

So how exactly are you cutting your resource usage down so low? That looks like a memory report from Sarge! I just installed Squeeze on a box at work and have mixed feelings about KDE4 but would like to minimize RAM usage. I will be building my own kernel for it as well.

To be honest I haven't a freaking clue.

All I did was install the latest liquorix kernel and rebooted.

Not sure if it helps that I use preload/prelink.

It wasn't this low until the new xorg in sid combined with the new liquorix kernel.

That almost makes me want to go to Sid, but I *JUST* downloaded Squeeze and started playing in KDE4 on the box we use for training at work. I have mixed feelings about KDE4, but I'm not a Gnome fan so I feel like a lost shell kiddie when it comes to Squeeze and Sid, so I may try your configuration in a few months. Thanks for the info! I certainly don't see why Linux can't be an efficient OS like you're posting!

What is the output of
cat /proc/meminfo
Your memory usage is nearly equal to
MemTotal - MemFree - Buffers - Cached while no swap is used.

My Debian systems never use swap, not even the ones with less than 512MB of RAM. That's one reason I swear by Debian. That and it isn't bloatware like pretty much every other distro has become. I am highly tempted by Gentoo simply because you can build everything during the install so it's 100% customized for that unique system, but I have yet to try it.

Oh yeah, almost forgot. 8MB is too much. Make it work on my souped-up Atari 800 with a whopping 384k of RAM! Or my stock 800 with 48k RAM. That would be hot!

muahahaha
And I was thinking I would put 2gb of ram in this piece of crap. Guess I do not really need it.
