Because the only problem is the artwork and the name. No need to put something in non-free over a quick fix.

The thing is that apparently it's not that easy - just keep track on the speed with which the iceweasel package is updated in squeeze and sid. :)

I see here (http://adblockplus.org/en/installation) it says that the latest version of adblockplus requires firefox/iceweasel 3.0.12 or later to work, something you ain't gonna see in Lenny anytime soon I suspect. When I used Iceweasel in Lenny and came across this issue, I just used a hosts file instead...have a look here http://www.mvps.org/winhelp2002/hosts.htm to get started.

iceweasel in stable is the same as Firefox 3.0.16, the security fixes are in xulrunner-1.9 (1.9.0.16-1). It is simple enough to change the version number or to override compatability for an extension. I have been using CopyURL+ since firefox 1.0 at ever update I just override it so it works with the new version of firefox.

In about:config just change general.useragent.extra.firefox;Firefox/3.5.6 to whatever version of Firefox you need.

Do any applications depend on Iceweasel? I'd rather have Firefox than the former. :|

In a console (no need for root): aptitude search ~D'^iceweasel$'

Anything with i at the beginning of the line is installed on your system; p means it's not.

Oh, and you might want to prune it even more with aptitude search ~D'^xulrunner-1.9$' which will find all those apps that depend on xulrunner-1.9 to see if you can get rid of that, too.

Something strange is happening in my desktop. I went into BNN.ca to watch top picks just now, and Iceweasel waited and waited, no video at all. I used my laptop, and it played immediately (using Google Chrome).

So, I switched to Google Chrome on my desktop, and it played right away. Something is fishing with Iceweasel?

Works just fine in Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.1.7) Gecko/20091221 Firefox/3.5.7 , if you continue to have issues please start a new thread.

Here's a script that's helpful for hosts file: http://www.webupd8.org/2009/05/linux-bl ... owser.html

Code: Select all

su mv /etc/hosts /etc/hosts.orig
su wget -c http://zelut.org/projects/misc/hosts -O /etc/hosts
(orig. from http://zelut.org/)

Thanks craigevil and harrycaul, very interesting about changing the version name for compatibility.

Using Firefox 3.6 at the moment on lenny + backports with vlc1.0.1 thanks to a number of helpful threads here.

Swiftfox is another good option as well.

I read a lot of these post this is some real funny stuff I laughed so hard I started crying. I like Debian and if the powers that be want Firefox to be Iceweasel in Debian that is good enough for me besides I like the name! :D

Firefox 3.0 coming to end of life

#92 Post by dotlj »

https://wiki.mozilla.org/Platform/2010-03-16
there will be no more updates for Firefox 3.0.x
the 3.5.10 and 3.6.3 branch update schedules will be posted next week
will contain lots of small regression and security fixes
security fixes
hopefully out of process plugins for 3.6.3 too!
With both Lenny and Squeeze using Iceweasel 3.0.x will this facilitate an upgrade to 3.5.x which is in backports?

Sorry if this is the wrong place, please move to correct place.

Squeeze has 3.5.8-1 at the moment.

Code: Select all

$ apt-cache policy iceweasel
iceweasel:
  Installed: 3.5.8-1
  Candidate: 3.5.8-1
  Version table:
 *** 3.5.8-1 0
        990 http://ftp.fi.debian.org squeeze/main Packages
        300 http://ftp.fi.debian.org sid/main Packages
        100 /var/lib/dpkg/status

That post is pretty vague: "there are still issues with it". Like what? They couldn't decide on an icon?

heh, I quite prefer the icon for iceweasel myself, and "iceweasel" sound no more odd than "Firefox".

glandium.org » Blog Archive » Security update for Iceweasel 3.6 preview
While the package is not ready yet for experimental, mostly because there are pending changes in the 3.5 branch, Mozilla released a security update today. So, here are the packages you need to be safe security-wise with Iceweasel 3.6. Please note only xulrunner packages have been updated, as the security fix lies in the xulrunner code.
. . .
A known regression of this version is that the icons in the search box on the top right don’t show up.

I installed firefox on debian just fine and run it all the time. I guess the debain folks just like to tout their own stuff.
