No sound with Lenny on Lenovo 3000 N200

Postby yeleek » 2010-01-26 15:12

Hi,

I've been a linux user for a couple of years, and am now trying Debian.

I've just performed a fresh install of Lenny, and am getting no sound on my Lenovo 3000 N200. The only item I've carried out so far is to update the kernel (as per Debian wiki) for Nvidia driver support.

lspci | grep Audio
00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

All volumes are turned up, and preferences/sound -> test appear to work but yet no sound.

Any advice please?

In a terminal alsamixer is the tool to make sure sound isn't muted. Log in as root (su, then password) and unmute all channels. Quit then run alsactl store.
Also make sure your user is a member of the audio group. Type group or groups in a terminal as your normal user.

Hi,

All of those checked and still the same problem... According to linlap the following applies to my laptop

'Like the wireless support it depends on your Linux distribution on how well the sound in the N200 works. If it does not work out of the box then try adding the following line to your /etc/modprobe.conf (or your distribution's equivalent) file:
options snd-hda-intel model=lenovo'

but I do not appear to have an /etc/modprobe.conf - so where would I put this?

Thanks

As root type locate modprobe.conf

If you get an error that locate isn't installed do aptitude install locate, then updatedb, the try again.

Hi,

Thanks - Its here apparently

debian:/home/ben# locate modprobe.conf
/lib/linux-sound-base/noALSA.modprobe.conf
/lib/linux-sound-base/noOSS.modprobe.conf
/usr/share/man/man5/modprobe.conf.5.gz

Which one would i edit, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

Thanks

Wrong tree I think. What instructions are you following? Some time ago I needed a similar line to get my audio jack working properly. But I can't recall what file I put the line in.

At this point I suggest you post the output of lspci so that we can have a look at your audio hardware. When you find it, head over to the alsa page and do a search for it. There is often very good info there. Also, have a look in /usr/share/doc under the alsa folders... you should find a few documents in there that will provide good reading with where configuration files are located and such. Debian specific of course, which is helpful.

Have you tried playing some type of media (mp3, ogg, etc) file or similar?

Try running "alsaconf" as root. Not sure if it's the "Debian way", but it seems to get me working audio.

Tried that already - no joy.

Have fixed it though - added the model = lenovo part to /etc/modprobe.d/sound

Thanks for the replies anyway
