Debian Wireless Problem

Hi. I bought a notebook recently. It came with vista. I downloaded debian and ubuntu. I installed both of them. Ubuntu works with wireless just by entering wep pass but in debian we have to do that. I am not at home and no chance to connet to net with cable. So I can not use your tutor and also others to. Everybody tell it supposing we have a connection. I tried to download packages from the site but there are many dependency problems.

What is the wireless card that you are using?
I am sure it will work once the right drivers are installed.
Debian and Ubuntu behave different.

I am to assume from your sig you are running testing
What is the output from
$uname -r

Edit: This is the same card as I have on one of my laptops.
If you have contrib non-free in repositories
Example:

Then you should be able to get the firmware.
#apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi wireless-tools
You should be able to configure with network-manager or the likes.
Personally I use wicd.

I think this needs the kernel to be updated first before you install the ath5k drivers.

If you update the kernel and then install the ath5k drivers and still did not succeed try installing the ath9k drivers. I say this because I see that the wireless card is reported differently between Ubuntu and Debian.

I have read if the ath5 driver doesn't work, you can try blacklisting that driver and try to use the madwifi driver.

This probably isn't very helpful but I was curious about the Atheros driver as I was considering buying a PCI-e wifi card that has a Atheros chip.

My current wifi for my desktop is a usb wireless adapter with a Zydas chipset (zd1211). I recently got it to work, though.

Note: After the release of Lenny, the MadWifi driver and associated tools were removed from Debian (see Debian bug 519446). Use the ath5k or ath9k (802.11n) drivers instead.

Do you have a 2.6.30 or later kernel image installed?

I'm not sure if the ath5k driver was included in the 2.6.26 kernel, but it definitely is in the 2.6.30 kernel. Try running with root permissions in a terminal:

modinfo ath5k

and see what turns up. Even if it is in the 2.6.26 kernel, it was pretty rough at the time, and the newer kernel's version is much better. By the way, the ath5k driver does not need any additional firmware; it's completely open source. Check out the wiki: http://wiki.debian.org/ath5k

I am using 2.6.31 and still no connection with debian.

What do you get with the scanning command:

su -c 'iwlist scan'

If you can see networks, then the driver is working. Then you just need to get a connection manager set up and working. What desktop are you using?

I found a bundled version of wicd with some dependencies here, for Mepis, which is based on Lenny. Debian may still require more, but you can give it a try: http://www.mepislovers.org/forums/showt ... d-in-a-box
