{'cups_connection_failure': False} printer doesn't work

#1 Post by zeitgenosse »

Hello,
is here someone who can help me with a beginners question. That would be very great.
I've installed a debiansystem and that works really good, but for some unknown reason the printer doesn't work anymore. I don't know wether this problem exists since I made an update. Now the printer shows that data is sent to him, but the printer refuses to print something. See the report at the end. Thank you for your help.
yours sincerly

The fix by installing ghostscript-cups worked immediately for me too.
Install ghostscript-cups, then either restart cups-server or else reboot and voilla, printers working again."

I'm really a beginner in such things, thank you very much.

open a terminal
su
apt-get install ghostscript-cups

as said: i wouldn't know if thats the problem you got. i had the same problem that everything seemed fine, but when printing a test-page simply nothing happens. not even an error message. i got it solved, and the only thing i can remember about is installing ghostscript-cups (for me cups/printing is a big miracle and a lot of headaches).

It means that the package is not in Debian Lenny's repositories. You need to find another way to fix it.

yes. but i for one wouldnt know how.

<old-man ranting>
just to add something about fishes and fishing*
say a fellow says: "install this package".
you get an error. you may check this site:
http://www.debian.org/distrib/packages
if its a)available at all and b)for the branch you are running.
for ghostscript (as the minimum of ghostscript-cups) you would get this (for lenny):
http://packages.debian.org/search?keywo ... ection=all
while for squeeze (testing):
http://packages.debian.org/search?suite ... hostscript

and i know it sucks (and bugs me a lot) if searching for a solution and people start talking about fishes and fishing (about troubleshooting in general). i hope it ain't that way for you.
<ends here>
good luck with your cups/printing problem. sorry i was wrong.

*fishes and fishing says something about giving someone the exact answer (a fish) or to give him something about troubleshooting in general (fishing on his own). them say me got a streaming consciousness (less friendly: confused mind), but usually it ain't that bad. there is a minimum of reason to be found inside of it.

I answered the question correctly I believe. And neither would I know how to solve this. Hence the shortish reply.

I doubt installing that package is the only way to fix it. I had Lenny (in its testing phase) installed and printing worked. Something's just gotten messed up in this case. Maybe purging and reinstalling printing related stuff would help? Who knows. One could compile ghostscript-cups from source. Maybe that helps? (Even though it demands reading about compiling from source and other funny stuff.)

Anyway, good luck with this. I hope you get the problem solved.

i just wanted to stress that i agree with your answer. no need for him to search further in the wrong direction. didnt seem to have worked.
oh my, whats wrong with me and my words :-)

We're both dealing with a foreign language here, so no problem :) Anyway, you got me to elaborate on the subject. Maybe that's good. It's a Beginners' section after all.

Hello together,

thank you for that amusing conversation :-))) Now, unfortunatly I am still without any fish in my hands ....so I hope, that you can help me once again.

I followed this link:

http://packages.debian.org/search?keywo ... ection=all

and they wanted to know my "architcture" (alpha, amd ... ). From where do I know my architecture.

Second was recommended strongly to install ghostscript-cups with a Paketmanager. I know the command apt-get install ghostscript-cups, but what do I have to do, that my debiansystem takes ghostscript-cups from the link above (=http://packages.debian.org/search?keywo ... ection=all).

In other words: Where do I have to throw the fishing- rod. :-))
