Chinese support?

#1 Post by seshomaru »

I would like to be able to view Chinese pages on the internet and enable Chinese input system for open office and internet browser. I don't need the menus to display in Chinese.
Can anyone tell me which files should I apt-get?

You need to set locales on your computer and you need to install chinese fonts.
su to root, then do dpkg-reconfigure locales.
To determine which fonts you need, do apt-cache search --names-only chinese.

Are you using XFree86 or Xorg?

(Xfree86)

I installed the fonts and SCIM (input system)
I set the local
I now have 'SCIM input method" in 'Desktop preferences'
but still cannot view Chinese in the browser

I cannot invoke SCIM (ctrl+space doesn't work) and in Text Editor I don't have SCIM as an input method when I right click.

:? :? :?

For browsing you just need to install Chinese fonts:

apt-cache search chinese fonts

Thanks
But I would still like to be able to write Chinese
I have checked SCIM's website and although there are detailed instructions for Fedora and Gentoo , the instruction for Debian are just 'download the files'
I wonder if anyone manged to set up SCIM in Debian?
(any other input method is OK as well , but I like SCIM cause it does Japanese as well as Tradional and Simplified Chinese)

seshomaru,

Check out this HOWTO. I've gone through its motions once, and I'm a happy SCIM user ever since.

Good luck,
