Install mplayer from http://debian-multimedia.org, after putting their source into sources.list you can just apt-get install mplayer.

i dump every frame in a sequence with mplayer, then use imagemagick to convert them to gif, then open gimp and select all the files (although from bottom to top, otherwise it goes backwards) and open them as animated gif, et voila

I agree!
Above all among similar programs I like VidGIF!

Unfortunately they are Windows commercial proprietary programs. :(

Has anyone come up with a script to use mplayer for this?

mkdir tmp; cd tmp
mplayer -vo png /home/luser/foo.avi
mogrify -format gif *png

then in gimp when you open multiple files, select from the bottom and up as I said before (selecting from top to bottom will give you a video in reverse)

then save as animated gif

Wow thank you for link. I checked out this and I'm impressed.

Yeah "Video Avatar" is only for Windows but it looks great.. And it's geovid's soft. This name tells me a lot! :) Guess I'll load trial version.

I like to choose new ways! :)
