Install XMMS on Debian Squeeze???

#1 Post by jordi.castalla »

Hi!!!

I'm a Linux User since 2007. Later, i was an Ubuntu Fanatic User. But my computer is old, and Ubuntu is more slow in every version.

I'm from Valencian Contry, and I speak "Valencian" or "Catalan", but I like to learn English!

My question is that: How I install XMMS on Debian Squeeze???

Thanks! !

Code: Select all

# aptitude install xmms2
Check out About - XMMS2.
Q: Why is the Eunux kernel so bloated?
A: It was made in the image of its founder.

There seems to be plenty of clients to choose from. I don't use XMMS2 myself so I'm just guessing here. If you're using themes from GnomeLook (and you're using Gnome/GTK+), there's for example gxmms2.

xmms2 is nothing like xmms. It is a client audio player.

The closest you'll get to the original xmms is audacious or qmmp

http://audacious-media-player.org/

http://qmmp.ylsoftware.com/index_en.php
antiX with runit - lean and mean.

abraca and esperanza are two other frontends for xmms2 (besides gmmx2). a nice tool is xmms2tray (i hope this is it, i removed it).
like anticapitalista said: it is not xmms and audacious might be a replacement. i for one like alsaplayer-gtk or aqualung.

qmmp is hard to beat. It has an mplayer plugin biult in, and it is a ladspa host.......meaning Digital Sound Processing. To get the ladspa host stuff you'd have to compile the latest from svn. It also seems waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay more responsive than audacious.

I've discovered that mPlayer (smPlayer as a front-end) is the best. Not as sexy as the others, but the rest sound just terrible. Just make some shell scrips and playlists (copy from the smPlayer console) and enjoy the way I do.

If you talking about original XMMS then yes you can install it on Lenny or Squeeze. I have it installed on both and listen and record late night radio shows all the time and listen to them in the morning and record it in mp3 format to use less space on my hard drive. If that is what you are talking about..

qmmp here. Solid, lightweight player.

I would like to see that. I'm having issues with the source code myself.

XMMS Download and Install in the following order:

1. libgtk1.2-common_1.2.10-18.1build2_all.deb
2. libglib1.2ldbl_1.2.10-19build1_i386.deb
3. libgtk1.2_1.2.10-18-1build2_i386.deb
4. xmms_1.2.1-+20070601-1build2_i386.deb

Goto applications/sound & video/xmms
Select xmms
Control P (Opens Preferences)
Output Plugin
Select ALSA 1.2.10 output plugin [libalsa.so]
Apply
OK

This is the setting I use to listen to radio on. I found that if I don't use that output plugin then I don't received any sound on it.

Note: If during the installation process the OS states that it has a newer lib file ignore it and use the one your installing.

I hope this helps.

I am also interesting installing the original XMMS player for my newly installed 64-bit Debian stable, but I cannot find these packages? Do they not exist? I only found XMMS2, but that is nothing like the original XMMS. :(

Aww, no official Debian packages. Someone told me to try Audacious. I installed its v2.3.2 packages from the official Debian stable servers and briefly tried it. I like it! It's basically like old school XMMS and Winamp. I think this will do. :)
