C complier? [SOLVED]
Hi,
Brand new Debian user here, but I've been testing out various Linux distros for a little while now. I installed Lenny yesterday on an old Dell Latitude D600 with no problems. I want to use Conky 1.7.2 which I downloaded from the Conky web site (only v1.6 is in the Debian repos). When I ran ./configure I got an error "no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH". Is there no complier installed by default??? If not which do you suggest I install?
Thanks,
Steve

Re: C complier?
install build-essential
That should pull in what you need to start. You'll probably still need some package specific -dev files.
Looks like squeeze will release with 1.8 see #536320 - ITA: conky -- highly configurable system monitor for X based on torsmo - Debian Bug report logs

Re: C complier?
Thanks, Bugs!
Installed the build_essentials package and re-ran the ./configure. Got a lot further with the install, but still got an error msg:
"Can't locate your X11 installation"
Again, here is the config.log:
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This file contains any messages produced by compilers while
running configure, to aid debugging if configure makes a mistake.
It was created by Conky configure 1.7.2, which was
generated by GNU Autoconf 2.63. Invocation command line was
$ ./configure

Re: C complier?
Hi Eric,
I already installed the build-essentials package. You probably missed that fact in the thousands of lines of log files I've posted so far. I have two posts. The second one lists the error I'm getting now. Please take a look and see if you can help!
Thanks,
Steve

Re: C complier?
One more time.
I installed libx11-dev and re-ran ./configure. Got this error at the end of the output:
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
checking for LUA51... configure: error: Package requirements (lua5.1 >= 5.1) were not met:
No package 'lua5.1' found
Consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if you installed software in a non-standard prefix.
Alternatively, you may set the environment variables LUA51_CFLAGS and LUA51_LIBS to avoid the need to call pkg-config. See the pkg-config man page for more details.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I verified that lua5.1 was installed, even uninstalling and reinstalling it, and got the same error. A far as adjusting the environment variables, that's a bit above my head right now.

Re: C complier?
Could you post the output from running the following command:
pkg-config --modversion lua
pkg-config --modversion lua

Re: C complier?
steve@debian:~$ pkg-config --modversion lua
Package lua was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `lua.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'lua' found
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Well THAT looks like a problem. I did a file search in Nautilus for lua.pc and came up empty. The lua5.1 executable is located in /user/bin though.

Re: C complier?
You might try searching (the repositories?) for a 'lua-dev.deb' package. If you can't find one then you should be able to find a 'lua.pc' file in the source code package.

Re: C complier?
Oh dear. This string of problems is exactly why Soul Singin' wrote his guide to building programs the smart way.
http://forums.debian.net/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=38976
Seriously, when I first started to compile programs, I did it the hard way, too. Then found out that using the already debianized source files from upstream Debian will auto-install all the build-dependencies, apply Debian patches, and create .deb files automagically, taking almost all the work out of it. Even a big complex package like XBMC or VLC (1.0.5) becomes rather easy. The only knowledge I have to keep now is what to tweak in rules files if I get a build failure with Lenny's Python, for example.
Taking a look at the build-deps of Squeeze's 1.7.1 conky, I can see it needs (for deb packaging)
debhelper (>= 5.0.0), quilt, libx11-dev, libxft-dev,
libxdamage-dev, libxext-dev, pkg-config (>= 0.19), libglib2.0-dev,
libxml2-dev, libcurl4-gnutls-dev, libasound2-dev,
libtool, automake1.10
Quilt is a Debian patching tool, automake and libtool rebuild the configure script for your particular system...but you really don't need to know any of that to rebuild the debs for Lenny. It looks like all those build-deps are available in Lenny, also.

Re: C complier?
OK, took a look at backporting it to see if any pitfalls---you will need to upgrade libtool to the lenny-backports version, otherwise you'll get a build failure. Debian also disables the lua functionality, maybe because it's too buggy. Of course, if you are packaging it yourself, you can add that back in if you want. As a proof of concept, here's the 32 bit .deb:

Re: C complier?
He wants a version that's newer than the one even (currently) in testing/unstable. Now the bug report I linked to does contain links to some newer packages, and he can probably pull the debianized source from the lucid lynx ubuntu repos. Ubuntu -- Details of source package conky in lucid The lua stuff is pretty new and may just not be available in the current Debian versions.
In any case the lua package that's needed is liblua5.1-0-dev. For the 1.8 version you would also need libtolua++5.1-dev, which has just recently made it into sid and squeeze (not available in lenny). This package was brought in in order to enable conky 1.8 to come in (again read the bug report I linked)

Re: C complier?
OK, the lua support was first available in 1.7.1, which is the version in sid/squeeze. However the libtolua++5.1-dev package wasn't available and I suspect that's why lua support was turned off. So, no matter where you get the source from, you'll either need to turn off lua, backport Debian -- Details of source package tolua++ in squeeze, or just upgrade to squeeze

Re: C complier?
A lot faster just to backport libtolua++ to Lenny than update to Squeeze!

I took a look at Ubuntu's 1.7.2 conky and may give building it a try. It actually builds two version of conky: a "-std" version, much like Debian's, and a "-all" that enables every possible option. Lucid's 1.8 is still a pull from git and may not be very stable...

Re: C complier?
Just as an FYI 1.8 has already released 2 RC versions. Next release will either be final or RC3, so I suspect that it's likely to be pretty stable, even as a git pull (and git is likely in even better shape than RC2, which was released 2010-01-24)

Re: C complier?
Wow, folks, lots of great replies! Thanks.
First, I got Conky 1.7.2 working under Linux Mint 7 with no problems by accessing the Ubuntu Karmic repositories. I tried that with Lenny and it wouldn't work. Based on your posts I could try the Lucid repositories instead? Any 1.7.x version is fine for me right now. I want the weather functionality that isn't available in 1.6.x.
Upgrading to Squeeze is also an option since my Lenny build is only for testing anyway.
Lastly...Build my own package? This newb would love to try it. Someday. But not yet. I think. I'll read that post with the build instructions to see what I'm in for.
Again, thanks for your replies. I'll update this post with what I finally do.

PS - Oh and that Google Docs link wouldn't work for me.

Re: C complier?
Thank you for the Google Docs access! Your .deb file installed without any errors. I was trying to do the 1.8.0 install using the Lucid repos, but I kept getting an error trying to update a libc6 library.
One more question - Conky 1.7.1 should support imlib2 which enables the display of weather icons in conkyForecast, yet they are not displaying on my system. All other conkyForecast info is. Any ideas why?

Re: C complier?
Well, I just recompiled the upstream Debian version without any changes for the 1.7.1 Conky. There is a configuration option to turn on the imlib2 support, which the Debian version, and I, did not enable. I tried the 1.7.2 Ubuntu source with that enabled, but got a build failure related to imlib2...which maybe is why it was disabled. I will see if rebuilding a newer imlib2 for Lenny will fix that bug.
And the libc6 problems...many times you can't use a program compiled against a newer libc6, yet if you take the same source code and compile it against your version, it will work fine...That's about the major reason for backporting.
