Upgrade killed flashplugin-nonfree

I just performed an update and it killed the flash plugin. Any suggestions on how I can fix this or is it just a waiting game?

I always run 32-bit, even though all my systems are amd64, so I'm not sure this is the root of the issue.

Adobe has murdered Flash for 64-bit Linux. At least for the moment.

On Thursday, the company took the beta tag off the 32-bit Flash Player 10.1 for Windows, Linux, and Mac, and it released a slew of security updates for versions 10.0.45.2 and earlier. But at the same time, it posted a statement to the Adobe Labs page announcing the end of the Flash 10.1 for 64-bit Linux beta.

However, the company says it intends to offer 64-bit Linux support in a future release.

"The Flash Player 10.1 64-bit Linux beta is closed," the statement reads. "We remain committed to delivering 64-bit support in a future release of Flash Player. No further information is available at this time. Please feel free to continue your discussions on the Flash Player 10.1 desktop forums."

Ah, but if you visit the desktop forums, you're told not to discuss 64-bit Linux Flash, and you're pointed to the 64-bit Linux forum. And as a Slashdotter points out, the 64-bit forum has been set to read-only. "Like in a Kafka novel," says another Slashdotter. "I'm not sure whether I should laugh or cry... but it reminds me of reading The Trial."

Meanwhile, others have no intention of crying. "That's one down," reads the first comment, as Slahsdot points to the death of the 64-bit Linux player. "Now, get them to cancel flash on i386 Linux, then on MacOS, then Windows, and we'll be all set."

This does not appear to come from Steve Jobs.

Though it has closed the Flash 10.1 for 64-bit Linux beta, Adobe tells us that it still intends to offer 64-bit Linux support in a future version of the player. "We remain committed to bringing native 64-bit Flash Player for desktop operating systems," the company says. "We expect to provide native support for Windows, Macintosh, and Linux 64-bit platforms in an upcoming major release of Flash Player."

I've removed the 64bit version.

debian-multimedia (unstable repo) has a working 32 bit version
with all required ia32 libs ready to install on amd64 systems

That is too bad. Security flaws aside, it did preform better for me.

I am ashamed I removed gnash and will not be abandoning it in favor of any adobe solution again.

Just a little typo - nonfree should be non-free

It's possible that you have libflashplayer.so still on your system too. Check these locations at least:
/usr/lib/chromium-browser/plugins/
/usr/lib/flashplugin-nonfree
~/.mozilla/extensions/
I simply copied libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib/chromium-browser/plugins/ and Chromium on 64bit is playing flash videos.

Re-Installing flashplugin-nonfree is working for me now, Squeeze 64bit.
Squeeze 64bit has had a number of breakages the past couple of weeks, probably due to the high number of updates being pushed through, most appear to have been fixed within a day or two.

How did you get flash working again in squeeze? I get:

Adobe killed Flash for amd64, it was updated for 32bit in the Debian repos and removed for 64bit because it had security holes in it big enough to drive a tank.

Adobe Flash 64 bit is dead, ding dong the witch is dead. Good riddance.

Yes, and an increasing number of YouTube videos are available in WebM format. These work very well with Firefox 3.7a6pre which you can get from http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/ ... est-trunk/

64 bit or 32 bit on amd64

Etch (oldstable): The 32 bit version of Adobe Flash Player 9 is installed. On amd64 the 32 bit plugin is accessed via nspluginwrapper, and the 32 bit plugin uses libraries made available in the packages ia32-libs and ia32-libs-gtk.

Lenny (stable), Squeeze (testing), Sid (unstable): The 32 bit version of Adobe Flash Player 10 is installed on i386. The 64 bit version of Adobe Flash Player 10 (still in Adobe labs) is installed on amd64. Users of amd64 who prefer to use the 32 bit version of Adobe Flash Player 10 can install a browser and the 32 bit plugin in an i386 chroot as well described in the AMD64 HOWTO

Security considerations

Users of Adobe Flash Player should follow security bulletins and advisories published at http://www.adobe.com/support/security/ .

Gnash doesn't work for me. Youtube gives me the following error message, other sites don't work either:

What happened with the nsplugin option. I tried installing adobe flash with nspluginwrapper however I ran in all sort of missing libraries

Gnash works on Youtube if you block cookies from Youtube. I've been able to do this with browsers other than Iceweasel/Firefox, and I think you can install an add-on to do it in Iceweasel. There's also minitube in the repos now. It is true, though, that Gnash chokes on a lot of other video sites. It works pretty reliably with YouTube and Blip.TV in my experience, but with slightly inferior performance to Adobe's version.

sudo echo "deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org sid non-free" >> /etc/apt/sources.list

Seems the flashplayer-mozilla is only available for sid..... By adding the above one would not have to run the wget command to grab the deb and could just run the normal:

sudo aptitude install flashplayer-mozilla

I switched to 32 from 64 last Sunday: unfortunately, 64 had worked better than 32. For example, flash iworks nto yahoo mail but it is slow and it freezes very often.
