Any technology that develops a die-hard cult following will long exceed its life expectancy. Consider that some people are still playing 8-bit video games.

I remember wanting something like this - too bad it's come so long after I learned to stop worrying and love the fourth.

Re: The Trinity Project Picks Up Where KDE 3.5.10 Left Off
Don't get me wrong I loved kde3.5, kde4 is a total abomination. I have tried it multiple times, it hasn't managed to stay installed for more than 30 minutes each time. The day kde4 hit sid I installed lxde, took a while to replace all the apps I was used to using in kde3.5 but it was worth it. LXDE is fast and light just like kde 3.5.10 was.

Re: The Trinity Project Picks Up Where KDE 3.5.10 Left Off
I did the same thing with Xfce 4.6. After about a week, I stopped missing even KDE 3.5.10. I still miss a few KDE3 features, like seeing file properties when you hover over an icon, but Xfce is very light and fast, while being much closer to KDE3's functionality and stability than KDE4 was.craigevil wrote:Don't get me wrong I loved kde3.5, kde4 is a total abomination. It strikes me that so many ppl were whining about KDE3, but now few ppl seem to care about having debian packages.

It would be nice if they did have Debian packages. I have grown fond of lxde since I switched to it, no reason to go back to kde3.sir fer wrote:So why is it 'too bad' they only have Ubuntu repos?craigevil wrote:Too bad they only have Ubuntu repos.

In the past year, I've read that Xfce development has sort of stalled, while LXDE development is progressing very rapidly. Is that still true, and is LXDE still pretty "bare-bones" compared to Xfce?craigevil wrote:I have grown fond of lxde since I switched to it, no reason to go back to kde3.

Re: The Trinity Project Picks Up Where KDE 3.5.10 Left Off
Well, you have a file manager which has a trashcan and can automout (sadly only via HAL), you can do the usual things like setting your wallpaper, you have icons... it is pretty barebone. It has a pretty nice WinXP-style picture viewer, as well as a foobar-like audio player (without tabs however). The panel is pretty customizable, but not on par with any of the big ones. It only has a classical, Gnome-style/Windows9x-style menu, nothing like Mint/SuSE. But then again, Xfce's isn't that flashy either. Theming is rather lame: there is a separate prog for GTK themes, fonts and icons, but Openbox's theme and window fonts (LXDE's window manager) are set via obconf. The wallpaper again is set by yet another proggie accesible by right clicking the desktop. There is no special network manager - you install gnome's network manager or wicd. I also suggest gnome-power-manager if you are on a laptop. It uses lxterminal by default, though I rather like urxvt.ComputerBob wrote:In the past year, I've read that Xfce development has sort of stalled, while LXDE development is progressing very rapidly. It kinda feels like the old Windows 95 times - you will have to supply most of the progs yourself by other means.
You can even start compiz, but it won't decorate your openbox, instead it'll use metacity. You can however substitute it for emerald. The compatibility, however, is very low and you have to tweak certain things in the Compiz settings.

Re: The Trinity Project Picks Up Where KDE 3.5.10 Left Off
The nice thing about LXDE it doesn't come with a million apps like Gnome/KDE. Plus its light weight, at boot I am only using around 50mb of ram.canci wrote:Well, you have a file manager which has a trashcan and can automout (sadly only via HAL), you can do the usual things like setting your wallpaper, you have icons... it is pretty barebone. pcmanfm uses gvfs to automount. Personally I think the kde4 menu and the Mint menu suck. I want a menu where I can find my apps.
Themes/icons use gtk themes, set using lxapearance. lxmusic is a front end for xmms2. I prefer using moc, shell-fm and mplayer.
If you don't like lxpanel it is simple enough to use awn, cairo, docky, etc. The screensaver uses xscreensaver so there are plenty of different ones to choose. lxtask is good enough to see what apps are using ram/cpu and to kill any if the misbehave. xarchiver works as well as ark or file-roller. Parcellite is a decent clipboard manager. LXDE supports keyboard shortcuts for many things including switching virtual desktops.
Not having a million packages like the big desktops means less packages to upgrade and less to worry about breaking.
I like simple but not quite as simple as just using a window manager.

Wouldn't adding more functions to lxde defeat the purpose of having a lightweight desktop environment?

If you take that argument to the extreme, then the ultimate lightweight desktop environment would have absolutely no functions at all.jheaton5 wrote:Wouldn't adding more functions to lxde defeat the purpose of having a lightweight desktop environment?

True, but at some point after adding functions to lxde, you might as well switch to kde. Unless your purpose is to get lxde to function as a substitute for kde 4. I can understand that.ComputerBob wrote:If you take that argument to the extreme, then the ultimate lightweight desktop environment would have absolutely no functions at all.jheaton5 wrote:Wouldn't adding more functions to lxde defeat the purpose of having a lightweight desktop environment?

Of course, but there are entire galaxies of space on the continuum between LXDE's spartanic functions and KDE's bloat.jheaton5 wrote:True, but at some point after adding functions to lxde, you might as well switch to kde....

Re: The Trinity Project Picks Up Where KDE 3.5.10 Left Off
@cragievil: I totally agree with you. For me, even LXDE is too much - hence the Openbox/conky/tint2 combination.
I installed it on my mum's Pentium 4 - Lubuntu. My previous post was just a comparison to other DEs. The only thing
I really dislike about LXDE is the hassle you have in choosing themes and lxpanel's look with some themes.
But LXDE is still young, and tweaks, features, bug fixes don't necessarily entail more resource consumption.
EDIT: wow, hal is dead! Finally... tnx for the info on gvfs. Maybe not perfect for LXDE, but better nevertheless.
