Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100404 Iceweasel/3.6.3 (like Firefox/3.6.3)
Wonders why this thread isnt locked. The reasons why Firefox is called Iceweasel have been beaten to death many times.

Who care? iceweasel is more stable and with less security holes so who care what version it is? I can view youtube, google and forums.debian.net just fine, what more would I need from a browser? 3.7.4.5.3.4SE?craigevil wrote:Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; en-US; rv:1.9.2.3) Gecko/20100404 Iceweasel/3.6.3 (like Firefox/3.6.3)

Why would I care to build firefox packages? icewasel upgrade itself with apt-get upgrade.

Ice weasel and firefox, etc were put in here so that we would bite at every add-on ever made and slow our systems down soooo slow that they have time to go out drinking while we wait for the next page to load. Makes about as much sense as any other conspiracy theory out there..

Re: Why is there no Firefox in Debian?
Here's another post about Firefox coming back into Debian
It's said to be done due to to the changes in Mozilla policy.
And the most important idea about all that Iceweasel stuff (besides rebranding) is it's support for old 3.0.x version of Mozilla (which they have ceased to support).

I installed Minefield via the PPA on Launchpad.
Deal with it.

Sure installing Ubuntu packages on Debian, yeah that's definitely not the right way to go about doing things.jordanwb wrote:I installed Minefield via the PPA on Launchpad.

Re: Why is there no Firefox in Debian?
Because some people from FF decided to get picky and change the licence agreement along with throwing a fit over FF being maintained by others beyond their release cycle. While I can see some of their stance it is a bit of a snub to the Free software/Opensource community since they don't maintain patches for older releases of their software (ie. you need to upgrade to the next release instead). All corrections from knowledgible folks accepted. This is just my understanding of things.debianacm wrote:Why do we need to rename firefox on so many linux distro? LOL

What product or service do they sell? At the present, I am not aware of any that I have to pay for to be "legal" to use.
A quick search shows me to their home page where they say they are a project like any other open-source project. I did not see one piece of software for sale.

How about Swiftfox?
It's a clone of firefox in my opinion. everything "firefox" is the same. Give it a try.

Without Debian, Ubuntu would not exist.

Do we really need to continue this thread. Enough information has been provided to explain the how, why and what.
Iceweasel = Firefox
Icedove = Thunderbird
Iceape = Seamonkey
Why? See:

What is iceweasel?
Iceweasel is a fork [from Firefox] with the following purpose :
1) backporting of security fixes to declared Debian stable version.
2) no inclusion of trademarked Mozilla artwork (because of #1 above)
Beyond that, they will be basically identical. (quoting Roberto C. Sanchez post in debian-devel mailing list)
Also note that iceweasel is NOT Iceweasel from http://www.gnu.org/software/gnuzilla/.
