iwlwifi-6000 missing firmware, cannot install debian

#1 Post by sugarhigh »

Trying to install Debian on a new Thinkpad T410, from a netinstall CD. However rather quickly into the installation I am receiving the follow message:
Some of your hardware needs non-free firmware files to operate. The firmware can be
loaded from removable media, such as a USB stick or floppy.

The Missing firmware files are: iwlwifi-6000-2.ucode iwlwifi-6000-1.ucode

If you have such media available now, inser it, and continue.

Load missing firmware from removable media?

<Yes> <No>
The only firmware file I've been able to find is iwlwifi-6000-4 which I am still unable to get an internet connection with.

My network hardware: Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 and Intel 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection

If you are wanting to do the net install via a wireless connection, that is often problematic due to the proprietary drivers required for a lot of the wireless chipsets. If you have any way of establishing a wired Ethernet connection at least for the initial installation, life will be much simpler.

Must have forgot to mention that I do have a wired connection and have tried disabling the wireless on the laptop and connecting that way but I still receive the message about the iwlwifi and am unable to connect to a mirror for downloads.

Download the firmware, http://intellinuxwireless.org/iwlwifi/d ... 21.4.1.tgz

Put it in a flash drive then you can install it when asked for it.

Still no luck I am not sure if it matters much but that is the -4 version and no -2 or -1, but as far as I can tell it loads the driver then tries to set up my wireless but cannot detect any available wireless connection at which point it requests me to provide my wireless essid and password, I set the ssid back to default on my router and removed the password so there would be no mistakes but it fails to connect still

It may be that the installer is not detecting your wired connection. It should not really care about the wireless connection if it has a functioning Ethernet link. What version of Debian are you trying to install and where did you get the netinstall CD? It sometimes help to grab another installer from Debian website. The daily builds of Testing are worth a try. If you have a functioning wired connection, you might get a warning about the wireless NIC, but I don't know why the installer would quit.

It is a testing build, however maybe I will have better luck if I grab a daily snapshot, I had the same issues with the stable build. Downloaded the installers from Debian.org

I get the same message everytime I do a fresh install. I've done it so much I know what drivers/firmware I need. I always install over ethernet and then install the appropriate firmware. It's easy and it works. So at the screen where it asks to install the firmware, I just select NO.

Ahh looks like the daily snapshot is a success, it located both network interfaces right away, and let me pick my preferred network card for installation

Kudos on finding that site with Google, however I also found that site, which contains the 6000-4 version of the firmware, which I am fairly certain I stated was not working for me in my original post. Again I commend your ability to Google, but lets not assume that the poster had not bothered to search. Either way I've found some in non-free which got it working. Thanks to everyone for the help it is very much appreciated.

Just want to second this fix.

I'm running Squeeze on an Alienware M17X R3.

LSPCI output includes: 0d:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 (rev 35)

In an SU command line terminal, run: apt-get install firmware-iwlwifi

Left click on the network connection icon (top tool bar) - a list of available wireless networks should appear. Select the network with which you want to connect.

Right click on the network connection icon (top tool bar), select Edit Connections...
In the Network Connections dialog, select the Wireless tab, select your wireless network, click Edit...

From this point, the settings you'll need to enter will depend on your specific wireless network.

For what it's worth, here's what I selected:
Wireless tab
------------------
SSID = the name of my wireless network
Mode = Infrastructure
BSSID = <blank>
MAC address = <blank>
MTU: automatic

IPv4 Settings
-------------------
Method: Automatic (DHCP)

IPv6 Settings
--------------------
Method: Ignore

Wireless Security
-------------------------
Security: WPA & WPA2 Personal
Password: <your password obviously :-) >
