Debian Ciel -- My Theme Proposal for Squeeze

#1 Post by canci »

We have a winner: SpaceFun won the theme contest. :)
Again, sorry for the mix up before. Unlike stated earlier,
not all the contestants will be available in the repositories,
but rather only the winner, SpaceFun, then the legacy themes
More Blue and More Blue Orbit, as well as Nightly.

http://lists.debian.org/debian-desktop/ ... 00077.html

You can now do the following in Debian Squeeze to get the themes:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install desktop-base
Should you not be happy with the theme, this forum or Google have answers
on how to change / remove it.

All the proposals listed here:

* Nightly: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianArt/Themes/Nightly
* SpaceFun: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianArt/Themes/SpaceFun
* Ciel: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianArt/Themes/debian-ciel (with a
discreet variant)
* Lisp Machine: http://wiki.debian.org/DebianArt/Themes/lisp-machine
(with multiple colors)

Debian Ciel 2.2

Here is my theme proposal for Squeeze. It is public domain and can be modified freely.
I have abandoned work on this theme as of 11th November 2010 due to the following
reasons. I will of course create other themes in the future.

News

2.2. - 2010.10.23
* Final commit -- from now on bug fixes only
* The theme now has 2 versions -- one with the pinkish Debian branding (Debian Ciel)
and another with a dark gray one (Debian Ciel Discreet).
* Added a Debian Ciel Tango Icon Theme, which is basically Tango with the start-here icon
changed from those blue shoes to a Debian icon.
* All theme proposals were reverted to the default Debian settings due to stability concerns.
These are basically Clearlooks for everything GTK (not sure about Xfce?). They are fine for
the skin colour-wise. The icon theme is still debated and I am also hoping we will see
the lxde logout splash.

2.1 - 2010.10.14
* Debian Ciel got a bit of lipstick ;) Reintroducing the rather pinkish Debian logo by popular request.
Thanks to Yves and all others for the suggestion!
* overhauled the wallpaper and other backgrounds; slightly more gradients
* SLiM theme!
* new and better KDM theme!
* GDM / KDM backgrounds now without disturbing logo (thanks to secipolla)
* new pinkish Debian icon
* added Xfce theming proposal

2.0 - 2010.10.13
* a new, brighter and happier version with clouds :)
* now with KDM and KSplash theme
* wallpaper, GDM and grub background are now the same image
* added dark grey Debian menu icon
* changed GTK theme proposal to MurrinaAquaish
* changed Metacity theme proposal to Murrina Rounded
* changed GTK icon theme proposal to Tango
* added LXDE theme proposals (Openbox Clearlooks and GTK as above); also made an LXDE logout splash

1.2. - 2010.09.17
* changed Gnome theme proposal to MurrinaBlu (GTK) and Unity (Metacity) -- screenshots are added.
* changed notification proposal to notify-osd instead of the classic Gnome one.
* added warning about missing SLiM theme.

1.1. - 2010.09.17
* added another classic grub2 background with more contrast

1.0. - 2010.09.16
* first draft

TODO

* Boot splash code (Splashy, Usplash, Plymouth - I can't code any of those, although I might try playing with Plymouth)
* Packaging, testing.

Is it too little contrast? I've been thinking about another version with more contrast.

Yes. Just my personal opinion and only the first image.

Thank you for your feedback!

I'll do another classic grub2 with more contrast and also a SLiM theme.

If any of you know how to make boot splash screen scripts, kdm themes and such, you're welcome to contribute on the wiki.

I've added another grub2 with much more contrast and sort of like the Etch wallpapers. :)

The images are very nice, canci.
The theming maybe could get some improvement. I know you used existant icon and GTK themes but the blue could be less contrastant, both in the icons and in the titlebar.
I'm not a specialist on this but I recall that there are some apps/scripts now that change the main colour of the icon theme (if I find it I post here).

For the SLiM theme you basically need the backgroud, the panel image and the slim.theme file to set the layout. Maybe you could use a panel image like that GSplash image you posted, adjusting widthxheight and transparency, keeping maybe that Debian icon/title combo adjusting its size and position to fit the layout._EDIT- sorry, I downloaded it and saw you already made a SLiM panel. I'll examine the contents now.

If I knew how to do this (I know it must be simple in GIMP) I would do it :wink:

Just thinking here, there's the square background for GRUB's menu (fine) , then there will be the SLiM panel at login screen (I don't know how GDM3 looks like). So having the Debian logo inside a square during splash we must be careful how it will look jumping from one square to another, maybe working on the splash with just the logo could look smoother.
I don't know if people use boot splash in Debian or how well/not so well it works, though.

Sorry, the SLiM folder was uploaded by mistake and only contains the svg. :) I'm currently working on it.

I use Inkscape, except when resizing the svg files and exporting them to png - that's Gimp's job.

As for the theme, I know it isn't that pleasant. Personally, I'd prefer the Unified theme and elementary icons any day,
but A.) my theme is already enough of an Apple rip off as it is and many people don't like that Apple fad ;) and
B.) the murine engine needed for many of the glossy new themes is too old in Squeeze.
I'll try and look at the murrine-themes provided in the repos.

I think FreeSans is a pretty nice font when you add some hinting on top. I used it in the artwork.

I don't have a KMS capable card, so for me there is always a break with a short black screen between splash and login manager. Hence I wouldn't notice it so much.
Granted, gdm3's input window is a standard GTK themed window without the window manager. See here:

Just to say thanks again for all the compliments and that I've changed the theme proposals to
MurrinaBlu for GTK and Unity for Metacity. Very nice themes of which I was not even aware.
However, they might look a bit Apple-y and not be everyone's taste. I've also thought about changing
the rather blocky looking notification-daemon to notify-osd, which is also in the repos and, IMHO,
looks better. See for yourself:
