hibernate issue

#1 Post by rpm13 »

When I click system -> shut down I get the choices:

Code: Select all

suspend hibernate restart cancel shut-down
Of these suspend works but if I use hibernate I get unclean mounts in the next boot

Whats broken? Is there a fix?

It might help if you told us what version of Debian you are using, and what hardware you have it installed on.

The output of lspci and the laptop brand and type would help if someone else has that piece of hardware. Other than that there is the wiki:

http://wiki.debian.org/Hibernation

I just use suspend on my Acer Aspire One. Works whenever I close the lid.

It really depends on an interaction of the BIOS version, motherboard, and the kernel. You can dump dmidecode to a text file: (my system needs root permisions for this command)

dmidecode > dmidecode.txt

(default terminal opens in your home folder, so that's where the text file ends up.) Your motherboard should appear in that result; perhaps some searching of the web would yield answers.

dmidecode gives some 200 lines of stuff most of which makes no sense to me. I could attach it here if thats ok. Searching for motherboard gives (with a little context):

Code: Select all

Handle 0x0013, DMI type 16, 15 bytes
Physical Memory Array
	Location: System Board Or Motherboard
	Use: System Memory
	Error Correction Type: None
	Maximum Capacity: 4 GB
	Error Information Handle: Not Provided
	Number Of Devices: 2
Theres no other 'mother...'

Some other stuff that may be meaningful (to more knowledgeable folks :) :D )

Code: Select all

Handle 0x0005, DMI type 2, 20 bytes
Base Board Information
	Manufacturer: Intel Corporation
	Product Name: D945GCCR
	Version: AAD78647-300
	Serial Number: BTCR70100Y9X
Asset Tag: Base Board Asset Tag
	Features:
		Board is a hosting board
		Board is replaceable
Location In Chassis: Base Board Chassis Location
	Chassis Handle: 0x0006
	Type: Unknown
	Contained Object Handles: 0

Handle 0x0006, DMI type 3, 17 bytes
Chassis Information
	Manufacturer:
	Type: Unknown
	Lock: Not Present
	Version:
	Serial Number:
	Asset Tag:
	Boot-up State: Safe

To partially answer my own question:

From this link http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Pm-utils

I gather I need to put in a line resume=/dev/sdann (no of swap) in my grub.cfg.
Now that seems to make hibernate work

But as of now its a 'hand-edited' grub.cfg whereas with grub2 one is supposed to edit something in /etc/grub.d etc and regenerate grub.cfg

Any pointers to how to do this?

Well...at least that shows you have a board based on Intel's 945 chipset. I had a laptop based on that chipset and it did manage to hibernate and suspend to ram correctly. But then the machine's particular BIOS makes a difference, too. Often a newer kernel has included "quirks" for problem hardware, and you may luck out and find that fixes the suspend issue. Depending on what version of Debian is installed, you can grab a newer kernel from backports, upstream repositories, or a third party repo, such as the highly recommended Liquorix kernel.
