Title bar and menu of windows in Gnome are gone

#1 Post by doraimom »

Hi.
I don`t know what kind of combination of keys I pressed, but the title bar of all windows in my Gnome vanished.
Trying to fix it, I unmarked the option "show menu bar" in one of my windows. Then, I realised I couldn`t put it back either.
It`s kind of frustating be stuck in such a small problem, but Gnome isn`t offering me any easy way to put these things back in place.
Can anyone help me, maybe with a keyboard combination of keys that recovers all of this?

I tried to follow some strange tutorials I found in the internet asking me to delete gnome configuration files from my home.
I did it, it recovered Gnome windows default, but the menus are still gone. It just erased my customizations (colors, window color, bar size, etc.)
thanks for the help.

Have you been trying to install compiz?

What happens if you do this from a terminal

Code: Select all

metacity --replace &

I was using compiz. It may be some shortcut I typed and that made compiz eat the title bar of my windows.
I tried to deactivate compiz and see if the windows would get back in place, but nothing changed.

I can't type what you asked now. I decided to install windows 7 in my PC, and then run Debian inside it with virtualbox. I was going to do exactly the oposite, run windows inside Debian, but problems like this for small stuff like window management make anyone change their minds about linux.

Bad choice. Very bad choice.
Going for dual-boot would be better (you can still use VirtualBox in each of them).

ccsm (aka compiz-configs-settings-manager) -> effects -> window-decoration

what cynwulf said.

mv ~/.config/compiz ~/Temp/compiz_bu

apt-get install fusion-icon
change it via click.

apt-get install "another window-manager or another environment"

And so on.
Tons of ways to solve it. Let's don't say solve, let's call it troubleshoot.
You could have learned a lot. And you still can.

Of course the problem does not exist in Windows. There is no compiz.

Before you do anything too hasty, open gconf-editor>/desktop/gnome/session/required_components/windowmanager That should say "compiz" or possible "gnome-wm". Either one without quotes. Obviously if you have uninstalled compiz, change it to gnome-wm. Log out and then log back in. Post back if it works.

Pretty pointless in my humble opinion, but if that's what floats your boat...

It's pretty dumb to screw something up yourself and blame the OS. But it is pretty typical of windows fanboys.

Yep... I think the memorable quote from this thread is as follows:

That's part of the reason I am making the switch to Debian. All of the Ubuntu random posts count for one or two versions (6-12 months) and then may or may not work ever again.
